University Theatre's Production of 'Art'
To Open at Riverside Theatre May 1

 MAILED:  April 24, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's University Theatre will present "Art," written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton.

The play, directed by Dr. Terry Allen, professor of theatre arts, opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Riverside Theatre of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Additional performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. May 2-3 and 6-10 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4.

What is art? What is friendship? These questions are at the center of this hilarious send-up of modern art when the purchase of a white-on-white painting throws the friendship of three people into turmoil. Serge, played by senior Aaron Zook, Fall Creek, who fancies himself an intellectual, pays a small fortune for a work of art that is solid white. It's about five feet by four, all white with white diagonal lines. His friends are less than enthusiastic about his acquisition. To Marc, played by senior Mauricio Urusquieta, North Prairie, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists that Marc doesn't have the proper standard to judge the work. Yvan, played by sophomore Paul Bleier, Wautoma, attempts, unsuccessfully, to placate both sides. As a result of the controversy, revealing lessons in art and life ensue.

Senior Kelly Lee Kriesel, Madison, is the assistant director and stage manager, and junior Sara Danke, Wales is the assistant stage manager. Jody Sekas, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, is the scenic and lighting designer; sophomore Leahkim Gannett, Pepin, is the costume designer; and Arthur Gulig, is the technical director. Allen and Gulig are sound designers, and sophomore Breann Kissinger, Vesper, is the house manager.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC, are $9 for the general public, $7 for those 62 and older, $6 for children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID, and $5 for students with a university ID.
