UW-Eau Claire To Host UW System
Undergraduate Research Symposium

 MAILED:  April 23, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Nearly 300 students from 11 University of Wisconsin institutions will present the results of their research at the fourth annual UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, Tuesday, April 29, on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.

The event will highlight student research accomplishments and the important role faculty and academic staff play as mentors in the scholarly activity process, said Doug Stevens, of UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education.

Stevens said some students will present the results of collaborative research conducted with faculty mentors and others will present the results of their independent research. The presentations will include posters, oral papers and creative exhibits.

Poster sessions will be in the Tamarack Room from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Oral papers will be presented in Davies Center meeting rooms from 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:40 p.m. Creative exhibits will be on display in the Skylight Lounge and Davies Theatre from 9:30-10 a.m.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Napoleon Chagnon, professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Chagnon, one of the most famous anthropologists in the world, is an expert on the primitive peoples of the Venezuelan jungle, known as the Yanomamo. He will speak from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

Chagnon has studied and chronicled the life of the Yanomamo in record-selling books and prize-winning documentaries for 40 years. He spent time in remote villages so he could better understand their warfare and social interactions. As a result, the Yanomamo are known around the world as "the fierce people of the rain forest."

The event is sponsored by UW System Administration and hosted by the UW-Eau Claire Center for Excellence for Faculty/Student Research Collaboration and UW Continuing Education in cooperation with UW-Extension.
