EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW Extension will sponsor the second annual SmArt program, a summer art program designed for middle and high school students.

The program - open to all middle and high school students - will be held July 14-24 in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Classes are 9:30-11:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

SmArt emphasizes hands-on experiences in a variety of art disciplines. Students can choose from seven courses:

• "Fine Art of Silk-Screen Printing," where students learn to transfer designs to the screen and make prints suitable for framing
• "Beginning Jewelry Making," where students make jewelry from raw materials
• "Advanced Jewelry Making," where advanced students construct an original sterling silver ring containing a cabochon stone
• "Build Forms with Fibers," where students explore the magic of transforming everyday materials into sculptures
• "Picturing War and Peace," students learn painting skills and use contemporary newspaper images related to war and peace as inspiration for two paintings
• "Guerilla Publishing," where students learn low-budget ways to create their own vehicles for ideas
• "The Little People," where students use a fantasy theme and installation sculpture using clay and other materials to create an imaginary civilization

Tuition for SmArt is $65 per class, plus a $20 materials fee. Eau Claire residents can waive tuition for one class per child and Chippewa Falls residents can waive tuition for two classes. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes fill quickly.
