EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music
and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances
the week beginning Monday, April 28. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, April 28:
- Soprano Christina Burgess, Wausau, and mezzo-soprano Sarah Eichen, Burnsville,
will present a joint student recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of
the Haas Fine Arts Center. Burgess and Eichen are senior comprehensive music
majors. Burgess will begin the recital with "La Grimas Mias" by
Miguel Marques. She also will perform "By Strauss," with music by
George Gershwin and text by Ira Gershwin, and "100 Easy Ways" from
"Wonderful Town," with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by
Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Eichen will perform "Were You There,"
arranged by H.T. Burleigh; "Let Us Break Bread Together," arranged
by Moses Hogan; and "Nobody Knows de Trouble I've Seen," arranged
by Burleigh. Burgess and Eichen will conclude the program with "I Still
Believe" by Claude-Michel Schonberg from "Miss Saigon."
- Seniors Sean Hanson, Duluth, Minn., and Brian Thorstad, Hastings, Minn.,
will present a joint student trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital
Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Thorstad will begin the recital with Eugene
Bozza'a Caprice for Trumpet and Piano, and Hanson will continue with Concerto
for Trumpet by Eric Ewazen. Thorstad will finish the first half of the recital
with Pastorale for Trumpet and Bass Trombone, with James Yardley performing
on bass trombone. In the second half, Paula Meier on trumpet will assist Hanson
on "Du Style" by Theo Charlier, and both performers will finish
the concert with Concerto for Two Trumpets in Bb Major by Vivaldi. Andrei
Strizek and Judy Lies will provide piano accompaniment.
Tuesday, April 29:
- Kara Sorensen, Duluth, Minn., will present a student flute recital at 5
p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Sorensen, a sophomore
comprehensive music major, will perform four pieces: J.S. Bach's Sonata in
G minor; "Three Romances," Op. 94, by Robert Schumann; Sonatine
for two flutes by Paul Hindemith; and Aaron Copland's Duo for Flute and Piano.
Beverly Soll will assist Sorensen on piano.
- John Brobst, St. Cloud, Minn., will present a senior double bass recital
at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Brobst,
a senior comprehensive music major, will perform six pieces, including Concerto
in G by Serge Koussevitzky, "Prayer" by Ernest Bloch and Domenico
Dragonetti's Concerto in G. Yukiko Fujimura will assist on piano.
- Jazz Ensemble IV and Jazz Pedagogy Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30
p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Robert Baca, associate
professor of music conducts both ensembles.
Wednesday, April 30:
- Andrew Dziuk, Hastings, Minn., will present a senior trumpet recital at
5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The senior comprehensive
music major will begin the program with Concerto in E flat major, Hob. VIIe,
No. 1 by Joseph Haydn. Dziuk also will perform "Mattinata" by Ruggero
Leoncavallo, "Caprice," Op. 47 by Eugene Bozza and "Toccata"
by Giambattista Martini. Senior Andrei Strizek, Sun Prairie, will accompany
Dziuk on piano.
Friday, May 2:
- Senior Nate Medsker, Eau Claire, on bass trombone, and senior
Sean Solberg, Minot, N.D., on tenor trombone, will present a joint student
recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The
recital will begin with Medsker performing Concerto No. 1 by Alexei Lebedev.
Medsker also will perform "Sonatina" by Halsey Stevens and Sonata
No. 5 by Johann Ernst Galliard. Solberg will perform "Parable, Op. 133"
by Vincent Persichetti and "Concertino" by Lars-Erik Larsson. The
recital will conclude with Solberg, Medsker, senior Joe Hartson, Oconomowoc,
and junior Pat Bents, Eagan, Minn., performing "Czardas," composed
by Vittorio Monti and arranged by Mark Reift. Medsker and Solberg will be
assisted by senior Kristin Yost, Sisseton, S.D., and community member Elaine
Mann on piano and Hartson and Bents on tenor trombone. Medsker is a music
major and Solberg is a comprehensive music major.
Sunday, May 4:
- Rodney Hudson, associate professor of music, and Andrew Parks, associate
lecturer, will present a joint faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert
Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Parks, on horn, and Hudson, on trombone,
will begin the performance with Beethoven's Sonata in F for Horn and Piano,
Op. 17. The recital will continue with Concerto pour Trombone et Orchestre
by Henri Tomasi, Four Sketches for Solo Horn and Piano by David Uber, "Romance
for Trombone and Piano" by Carl Maria von Weber and "Recreation
pour Trompette, Cor, Trombone et Piano" by Pierre Gabaye. Parks and Hudson
will be accompanied by Beverly Soll and assisted by Robert Baca, associate
professor of music, on trumpet.
- Percussion Ensemble will present a concert at 5 p.m. in Gantner concert
Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will begin with "Forest
Rain" by Niel DePonte. The ensemble, directed by Jeffery Crowell, assistant
professor of music, will continue with "Ogoun Badagris" by Christopher
Rouse; "Hand Dance" by David Friedman; and "Nanafushi,"
composed by Naito Tetsuro and arranged by Crowell. Percussion Ensemble will
conclude the performance with "County Clare," arranged by David
Steinquest; "Trio Per Uno" by Nebojsa Zivikovic; and "Tribeca
Sunflower" by Julie Spencer.
