UW-Eau Claire to Host WSMA
State Music Festival May 3

 MAILED:  April 18, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Several thousand students will visit the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire prepared to give the performances of their lives as the university hosts a Wisconsin School Music Association State Music Festival from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

More than 30,000 student musicians will take part in WSMA state festivals, held on nine university campuses throughout the state.

"This is an exciting day for the performers, their parents and teachers," said Tim Lane, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of music. "It is also an important day for our campus because the WSMA State Music Festival is one of the largest events we host."
In order to participate in a state music festival, students must first earn a "starred first" rating at a WSMA District Music Festival, hosted by schools for students in grades 6-12. Students can select from a variety of instrumental and vocal solo and ensemble categories for their performance. Over 225 district festivals were held in Wisconsin during the past four months, involving more participants than any other student activity in the state. WSMA-sponsored festivals represent one of the largest student events in the nation.

"The level of performance and commitment exhibited by these young musicians is truly remarkable," noted WSMA festivals coordinator Richard Fellenz.

Other Wisconsin universities hosting WSMA State Music Festivals May 3 are UW-Stevens Point, UW-Green Bay, UW-Parkside and Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. April 26 festivals are scheduled at UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Milwaukee.

WSMA is a non-profit service organization composed of over 1,000-member public and private schools. Last year, more than 200,000 students took the initiative to be involved in WSMA activities, including district and state music festivals, the State Honors Project, Student Composition Project, state marching band championships and more. WSMA believes music is basic, and all children have the right to experience all that music offers them.

To learn more about WSMA, log on to WSMA State Music Festival schedules and results will be posted as they are completed. They will be searchable by school, student and event number.
