EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music
and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances
the week beginning Monday, April 14. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, April 14:
- Senior Graydon Peterson, Cedar, Minn., will present a senior composition
recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Four
of Peterson's compositions will be performed: Two Pieces for Saxophone Quartet,
"All the World's a Stage," "Barbed Wire Fencing v. 2"
and "Broken Gyros." Cornucopia Saxophone Quartet will perform Peterson's
Two Pieces for Saxophone Quartet. The quartet is comprised of senior comprehensive
music majors Jared Ziegler, Menomonie, James Gornick, Fennimore, Matthew McVeigh,
Stevens Point, and Sarah Minette, Whitewater. "All the World's a Stage,"
with text by William Shakespeare, will be performed by alumnus Jason Craft,
New Berlin, and senior Vincent Rose, Farmington. Ziegler and Peterson will
perform "Barbed Wire Fencing v.2" and senior Dave Whitman, Menomonie,
will perform "Broken Gyros."
Tuesday, April 15:
- Rebecca Burmesch, Ripon, will present an oboe recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips
Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The senior comprehensive music
major will perform Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C major by Joseph Haydn
and Sonate Für Oboe und Klavier by Paul Hindemith. Sophomore Yukiko Fujimura,
Kanagawa, Japan, will accompany Burmesch on piano.
Wednesday, April 16:
- Stacy Kern, North St. Paul, Minn., will present a senior bassoon recital
at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Hass Fine Arts Center. The senior
comprehensive music major will begin the performance with "Sicilienne
et Allegro Giocoso" by Gabriel Grovlez. The performance also will include
Concerto in F major, RV 489 by Antonio Vivaldi; Four Stucke for Bassoon and
Violoncello by Paul Hindemith; Sonata for Bassoon and Piano by Romeo Cascarino;
and "Contradanza" by Paquito D'Rivera. Kern will be accompanied
by senior Kristin Yost, Sisseton, S.D., and assisted by community member Mary
McCullaugh on cello.
- Mark McGinnis, Maplewood, Minn., will present a tuba recital at 7:30 p.m.
in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The junior comprehensive
music major will begin the performance with Two Unaccompanied Pieces by J.S.
Bach. McGinnis also will perform Concerto for Bass Tuba by Ralph Vaughn-Williams;
Concertino pour Tuba en Ut et orchestre ou piano by Eugene Bozza; "Fantasiestücke,
Op. 73" by Robert Schumann; and "Amazing Grace" arranged by
Luther Henderson and transcribed by McGinnis. Senior Andrei Strizek, Sun Prairie,
will accompany McGinnis on piano and will be assisted by his Universität
Brass Quintet co-members senior Jake Morris, Oconomowoc, on trumpet; senior
Greg Van Sickle, Pigeon Falls, on trumpet; community member Kelly Heidel on
french horn; and senior Nate Medsker, Eau Claire, on trombone.
- Jeffery Crowell, assistant professor of music, will present a percussion
recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Crowell will begin the performance with "Fabian Theory" by Nigel
Westlake. Crowell also will perform "And Now for the News..." by
Graeme Leak; "Hymn," composed by Karl Jenkins and transcribed and
adapted by Nanae Mimura; and "Tribeca Sunflower" by Julie Spencer.
Crowell will be assisted on percussion for "Tribeca Sunflower" by
seniors Eric Becker, Hartford, Timothy Doleysh, Appleton, and Matt Edlund,
Sun Prairie. The performance also will include "Nanafushi," composed
by Tetsuro Naito and transcribed and arranged by Crowell. "Nanafushi"
was originally composed for about 15 people, but Crowell transcribed and arranged
it for three percussionists. "I transcribed and arranged this taiko piece
after hearing and being completely fascinated by the KODO recording,"
Crowell said. Edlund and senior David Whitman, Menomonie, will assist Crowell
on this piece.
Thursday, April 17:
- Tenor Michael Rambo, Altoona, and mezzo-soprano Christine Schweikert, Coon
Rapids, Minn., will present a joint student recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips
Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance will begin with
Schweikert singing "Röselein, Röselein!" "Zigeunerliedchen"
and "Widmung" by Robert Schumann. Schweikert also will perform "Claire
de Lune" and "Mai" by Gabriel Faure, "None but the Lonely
Heart" by P.I. Tschaikowsky, and "Una voce poco fa" by Gioacchino
Rossini from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." Rambo will perform "Three
Songs from Shakespeare" by R. Vaughan Williams; "Siete Canciones
Populares Espanolas" by Manuel de Falla; "Every Time I Feel de'
Spirit," arranged by H.T. Burleigh; and "In the Mornin'" by
Charles E. Ives. Rambo and Schweikert are junior comprehensive music majors
and Schweikert also is a German major. Beverly Soll, performing arts and special
events coordinator, and senior Phillip Dorn, Clintonville, will accompany
Rambo and Schweikert on piano.
- University Trombone Choir and BASSically BRASS, a tuba ensemble, will present
a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
BASSically BRASS will begin the concert with the Overture from "The Impressario"
composed by W.A. Mozart and arranged by Ronald C. Knoener. The tuba ensemble
also will perform "Adagio" by John Stevens; "Berceuse and Finale"
from "The Firebird," composed by Igor Stravinsky and arranged by
Skip Gray; and "Ave Maria," composed by Franz Biebel and arranged
and conducted by senior comprehensive music major Andrei Strizek, Sun Prairie.
Strizek and senior comprehensive music major Dawn Holte, Sheboygan, will conduct
"Zephyrs," "Doldrums" and "Khamsin" from "Winds"
by Rodger Vaughan. University Trombone Choir will begin the second half of
the program with Fanfare for trombones and timpani by James Kazik. The trombone
choir will continue with Sinfonietta for trombone choir by Rayner Brown; "Color
Slides for Trombone Choir" by Keith Snell; "Elsa's Procession to
the Cathedral," composed by Richard Wagner and transcribed by Gordon
Cherry; and "Canzona Septimi toni No. 2," composed by Giovanni Gabrieli
and arranged by H. Lloyd Leno. The University Trombone Choir also will perform
"Big Pig" by Michael Davis, featuring soloists senior Joe Hartson,
Oconomowoc, on tenor trombone and junior James Yardley, Duluth, Minn., on
bass trombone.
