UW-Eau Claire Faculty and Staff
Group Holding Teach-in on Iraq War

 MAILED:  April 7, 2003

EAU CLAIRE -The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Staff and Faculty for Peace and Justice will sponsor a Teach-in on the Iraq War Tuesday, April 15, in Davies Center. The Teach-in is intended to provide information and a forum for discussion on various issues surrounding the war with Iraq.

Beginning at 1 p.m., concurrent hour-long presentations and discussions will be held in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Topics will include Just War, Civil Liberties During Wartime, Socialist View of War, Introduction to Islam, Iraq War Background, U.S. Military Interventions and Bases since Vietnam, Iraq War Myths, the Hmong Refugee Experience and Women's Perspective on War.

John Nichols of the Capital Times will wrap up the day with his keynote speech, "War and the Media," at 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre. A question and answer session will follow.

In the 1991 Gulf War, Nichols coordinated coverage for his paper from Tel Aviv, Israel, and Amman, Jordan. This experience, along with others, such as covering the first all-race elections in South Africa in 1994 and interviewing Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk, has been the subject of Nichols' writing for many years. Closer to home, he has also covered U.S. elections and interviewed George W. Bush.

Nichols earned his master's degree in journalism in 1984 from Columbia University and started the same year as a reporter at the Toledo Blade, where he was soon promoted to associate editor and the newspaper's senior writer on national and international affairs.

Besides writing for The Capital Times in Madison, Nichols travels frequently as he writes about national politics as a staff member for The Nation.

The event is free and open to the public.
