University Recreation Expands
Health and Wellness Offerings

 MAILED:  March 28, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will offer Acu-Yoga, Acupressure, Meditation, Chinese 18 Postures and Alexander Technique classes throughout April.

Acu-Yoga classes bring the body, mind and spirit together with a blend of stretching and breathing from traditional Hatha Yoga, as well as focus on the acupressure/acupuncture points.

Samantha Hansen, certified health and wellness counselor, will instruct the classes, which will be held Wednesdays, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Classes will be held in Room 105 of the McPhee Physical Education Center and are $23 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $38 for the community.

Participants should bring a blanket, a small rug or mat, and pillow(s), and should wear loose, comfortable and layered clothing.

Chinese 18 Postures II, which is only open to those who have completed Chinese 18 Postures I, will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, April 9, 16, 23 and 30, in Room 106 of McPhee. The cost is $15 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $30 for the community.

The goals of the class are to review and build on the already learned postures from Level I, with new breathing and stretching routines to increase physical stamina, reduce stress and promote wellness. Diane J. Omtvedt, nurse practitioner, is the course instructor.

Participants should wear baggy shorts or pants with an elastic waistband and flat, flexible shoes to help provide good balance.

The Alexander Technique is designed to detect patterns of tension from everyday activities like sitting, standing and walking, and turn them into patterns of ease.

Comfortable clothing is suggested, but business casual attire is acceptable.

Dr. Toni Poll-Sorensen, professor of music and theatre arts, will lead the class on Thursday, April 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Choral Room 143 of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Classes are $8 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $12 for the community.

"Self-Care with Acupressure" is a two-hour class that will discuss the benefits of self-acupressure including relief of headache and body pains, indigestion, insomnia, emotional balancing and more.

Hansen will lead the class on Wednesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hilltop Recreation Center Lounge. Classes are $8 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $12 for the community.

Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing.

"How to Begin a Sitting Meditation Practice" will meet Wednesday, April 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. in McPhee, Room 106. Participants are asked to bring a blanket and two firm pillows and wear loose, comfortable clothing.

The class will take participants though a guided meditation while discussing possible benefits, meditation space, positions and pre-meditation stretching.

The class will be led by Hansen and will cost $8 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $12 for community members.
