Claire To Hold
Twelfth Annual Mathematics Retreat
MAILED:
March 27, 2003
EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire mathematics department will
sponsor the twelfth annual UW-Eau Claire Mathematics Retreat Monday, April 7.
Presentations by faculty, student and guest speakers on special topics in mathematics
will replace all mathematics classes that day and take place from 8 a.m. to 2
p.m. in Hibbard Hall. Presentations will be made at levels appropriate for undergraduate
mathematics students, high school faculty and some well-prepared high school students.
This year's distinguished speaker will be Dr. Georgia Benkart, a professor of
mathematics at UW-Madison. She received her bachelor's degree from Ohio State
University in 1970 and her doctoral degree from Yale University in 1974. Benkart
has received numerous honors, the most recent being named Polya Lecturer by the
Mathematical Association of America. Benkart's specialties are Lie Algebras, Representation
Theory and Combinatorics. She has given numerous addresses on these subjects and
others.
Benkart will give her first talk, "Women Mathematicians - They Exist, Therefore
They Think," at 3 p.m. in Room 100 of Hibbard Hall. A reception for all participants
and guests will follow at 4:15 p.m. in Rooms 506 and 507 of Hibbard Hall. Her
second presentation, "Going Up and Down?" will begin at 5:30 p.m. in
Room 100 of Hibbard Hall.
All events are free and open to the public. Area teachers and students are encouraged
to attend.
