36th Annual Jazz Festival Set for
March 28-29 at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the 36th annual Jazz Festival, March 28 and 29. Jazz Festival at UW-Eau Claire is one of the oldest and largest festivals in the nation, offering outstanding performances by professional musicians and college, high school and junior high bands.

This year's featured Jazz Festival artists are Sam Pilafian and Wycliffe Gordon.

Pilafian, professor of tuba and euphonium at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Ariz., is a founding member of the internationally renowned Empire Brass Quintet and has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the Metropolitan Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Lionel Hampton and Pink Floyd.

Gordon, one of the leading jazz trombonists in the United States, has been a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet. Gordon has performed with artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderly, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Joe Henderson, Tommy Flannigan, Phil Woods, Lionel Hampton and Branford Marsalis. Currently, Gordon is an artist in residence with the jazz studies program at Michigan State University.

The festival will begin Friday, March 28, with College Day, which consists of critiqued performances, clinics and master classes with the guest artists. A concert will follow Friday's festival at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial High School auditorium featuring UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I, Honor College Big Band and Combo, and guest artists Pilafian and Gordon. A pre-concert show featuring JAZZAX Saxophone Quartet will begin at 7 p.m., and an open jam session will follow the concert at 10 p.m. at the Holiday Inn-Campus Area.

Junior High/High School Day will be held Saturday, March 29. The schedule is similar to College Day and includes a 12:30-1:30 p.m. concert at Memorial High School for junior high participants. High School participants will enjoy a noon concert in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center and a 4:30 p.m. concert in Zorn Arena featuring UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II.

The festival will conclude with a 7 p.m. concert in the Memorial High School auditorium with Pilafian and Gordon, UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I, Honor High School Big Band and Combo, and Honor Junior High Big Band and Combo. There will be a pre-concert show at 6:30 p.m. in the Memorial High School auditorium.

Events during the day are free and open to the public. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday evening concerts are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC. Tickets are $12 for the general public; $10 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff with a university ID; and $8 for Jazz Festival participants.
