UW-Eau Claire Student Awarded
International Scholarship for Study Abroad

 MAILED:  March 13, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — Mao Xiong, a junior psychology major at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for spring 2003.

"I was so surprised and felt privileged," said Xiong, Altoona, who is studying at Harlaxton College in England this semester. The experience will allow her to share her culture with other countries and to share that experience with her family, she said. It will also enhance her understanding and knowledge of other cultures, Xiong said.

For the spring cycle, a total of 667 students applied for the 172 awards that were given, said Sarah Phillips, the program coordinator for the scholarship. The Institute of International Education administers the scholarship. The U.S. Department of State and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsor the scholarship.

The award amounts vary up to $5,000 and can only be used to cover eligible study abroad program costs and related expenses, such as tuition and fees, room and board, books, local transportation, health insurance and international airfare. The scholarship is designed to support academic study, so recipients may not work while abroad.

The cost to attend Harlaxton is about twice as much as for UW-Eau Claire, Xiong said.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must be a citizen of the United States, an undergraduate student in good standing at either a two-year or a four-year institution and a recipient of federal Pell Grant funding.
