Willy Porter and Guest Artists
To Appear at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  March 10, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Willy Porter will return to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire concert stage Friday, April 4. The doors will open at 8 p.m. for the show in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Dan Bergen & the Park St. Band and the Jim Pullman Band will appear as special guests.

"Willy Porter captures the streetcorner ethic of acoustic performance perfectly," wrote the Village Voice last fall. "His recent self-titled fourth album meshes honest lyricism and amphetamine-driven fingerpicking into a bluesy folk fireball."

"Willy Porter's guitar playing is so expressive and such an integral part of his performances that he is perhaps best described as a guitarist-songwriter rather than a mere singer-songwriter," wrote Michael Simmons in his Amazon.com review of the 2002 release — which he praised as "a near perfect blend of heartfelt vocals, smart songwriting, and subtle instrumental prowess."

Porter's 1999 CD "Falling Forward" (Six Degrees Records) was his third recording, and his first since the surprisingly successful "Dog Eared Dream." That 1994 indie record was picked up in 1995 by a major label (Private Music), spawned an unexpected alternative radio hit (the song "Angry Words"), and led the UW-Eau Claire graduate to a series of tours opening for major acts including Tori Amos, The Cranberries, Jethro Tull, Rickie Lee Jones, Jeff Beck and Sting.

"The songwriter, singer and guitarist has gradually, quietly built a globe-spanning career from a Milwaukee base," wrote the Shepherd Express. "He's not a candidate for the cover of People or Spin, but he's heard on "World Cafe," and he makes a living performing and recording. Music is his day job as well as the love he pursues by night. Anyone who knows him would add that it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy."

Tickets are $9 ($7 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID card) at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, and will be sold at the door.

Patrons may also charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required in the bar area. The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
