Boxwood Winter Weekend
To Be Held at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  March 4, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The public is invited to several events being held in conjunction with the Boxwood Winter Weekend, a workshop celebrating and sharing the music and traditions of the flute, March 14-16, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Friday, March 14, there will be a chamber music concert at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Immediately following the concert, audience members will be invited to don their dancing shoes for an Irish Ceili dance in the commons area of the fine arts center, featuring the Chris Norman Ensemble, the Boxwood faculty, special invited guests and caller Karen Fox Fisher.

Saturday, March 15, there will be a Gala Boxwood Winter Weekend Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Tickets, available from the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, (715) 831-2345 or toll-free at 1-888-523-3866, are $15 per event or $25 for both events for the general public and $10 per event for students.

Chris Norman is the director of Boxwood, which has established a multicultural and multidisciplinary dialogue between performers, teachers, scholars, students and makers of the flute through its annual weeklong festival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, as well as the Boxwood Winter Weekend at UW-Eau Claire. Originally from Nova Scotia, Norman is widely known from his recordings, as well as his work as a solo performer and with The Chris Norman Ensemble, The Baltimore Consort, Skyedance, Helicon, Chatham Baroque and Concerto Caledonia.

Other Boxwood faculty members are Tim Lane, professor of flute at UW-Eau Claire, Janet See, Charles Rochester Young and Rick Wilson. Lane, See and Young are all teachers and artists who have performed widely in the United States and other countries. They will offer workshops in their different areas of expertise. Wilson is a flute scholar, collector and performer who will share a sample of his collection and his ideas on the instruments and the music.

Registration is still open for participation in the Boxwood Winter Weekend, which offers a variety of classes and sessions in a supportive, non-competitive environment. No auditions are necessary. In addition to flutists, participants have included musical enthusiasts ranging from dancers, singers, violinists, violists, recorder and double bass players to music aficionados from all walks of life. Information is available at Boxwood Web site or by calling Ann Huntoon at (715) 384-6585.
