Student Senate/Davies Center Vote

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students will vote March 3-6 to elect Student Senate leaders and decide whether to approve a referendum to build a new student center that would replace the current W.R. Davies University Center.

As you may recall, in 2000 students voted to spend $8.5 million to refurbish and expand Davies Center - originally built in 1959. Over the past year, a committee of students and university staff worked with architects and consultants to determine how best to utilize those funds to improve the building. It was eventually determined the original $8.5 million was not adequate.

Two proposals were then considered: a major remodeling and expansion of the existing building, which would cost $33.7 million, or construction of a new building, which would cost $36.1 million. The committee recommended construction of a new building and to place the question on the March referendum to coincide with Student Senate elections in order to generate the highest possible student voter participation.
