UW-Eau Claire's Winter Carnival Comedy Showcase
To Feature Mike Birbiglia and Mission IMPROVable

MAILED: Feb. 7, 2003

EAU CLAIRE  The smart, quirky wit of Mike Birbiglia and the improvisational antics of Mission IMPROVable will be presented on the Winter Carnival Comedy Showcase Friday, Feb. 14, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Doors will open at 9 p.m. for the show in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.
A graduate of Georgetown University, Mike Birbiglia got his taste for comedy by winning the "Funniest Person on Campus" contest, hosted by Victoria Jackson, and quickly became a regular at the DC Improv. He has been seen on NBC's "Late Friday," Comedy Central's "Premium Blend," and the MetroChannel's "New Joke City" with Robert Klein. He most recently appeared on CBS's "Late Night with David Letterman" and NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly."
Birbiglia was named one of Seventeen New Voices for a New Generation by Seventeen Magazine, along with Josh Hartnett, Venus and Serena Williams and Chelsea Clinton.
Backstage Magazine wrote that "it's quite impressive how [Birbiglia] covers such a wide range of topics while still working totally clean, providing a set that's juicy for adults, yet family friendly enough to make him perfect for a sitcom."
Mission IMPROVable is a fast-paced and exciting new form of comedy where professional actors perform theater games much like those seen on the popular TV show, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" The actors make up each game on the spot from audience suggestions. Some games have audience volunteers playing along. The Chicago-based company themes its performance around the 1960s TV show, "Mission Impossible," with the six company members as the agents, audience members the co-agents, the games the missions, and wit and high jinks the weapons.
Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, and will be sold at the door.
Patrons may charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The show is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
