Expert on Low-cost Travel
To Speak at UW-Eau Claire
MAILED: Feb. 6, 2003
EAU CLAIRE — World traveler Gil White, author of "Europe on 84 Cents a Day," will present a multi-media lecture on Monday, Feb. 10, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Titled "Europe and the World on 84 Cents a Day," the program will begin at 5 p.m. in the Ojibwa Room of Davies Center. Admission is free and open to all.
Over the past 19 years and 55 countries, White has gathered 28 imaginative and fun cost-saving methods for obtaining free transportation, 16 for free accommodation, three for free food, and four for saving money on the foreign money exchange. The methods provide an educational experience and are the highlights for any traveler.
White's formula for reducing major expenses is simple: the traveler should possess enthusiasm, an interest in meeting people, and a willingness to return gestures of hospitality and generosity by performing simple chores or offering small gifts. This exchange allows the traveler to reduce costs while obtaining greater insight into the country and its people.
White believes that too many students feel they must save thousands of dollars to travel and measure their fun by how much money they spend rather than by budgeting and exploring the country creatively. His personal experiences and successes highlight the lecture, along with a slide show and selected taped conversations.
Educated in Australia and the United States, Gil White received his bachelor's degree in administration in Canada. He has given more than 450 lectures in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.
The presentation is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
