Mathematics major selected for NASA internship
A UW-Eau Claire senior mathematics major and McNair Scholar will spend the spring semester as an intern at a National Aeronautics and Space Administration flight facility in Virginia. Rochelle Halama of Independence will begin her NASA internship Jan. 12, 2009, at the Wallops Flight Facility, where she will focus on researching ways to prove software reliability. Halama has worked on research projects at UW-Eau Claire with Dr. Mohamed Elgindi, a professor of mathematics. That experience will help her in the research-centered NASA internship, she said. Full story. Vice chancellor finalist visits continue this week George Hollins, university business manager at The University of Iowa, will be on campus today and tomorrow, Nov. 17 and 18. He will speak at two one-hour forums open to faculty, staff and students at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and at 10 a.m. Nov. 18. Both forums, which will be identical in format, will be held in Davies Theatre. An additional campus visit by finalist Greg Garber, assistant professor of finance and accounting at Concordia College, is scheduled for Dec. 1 and 2. Finalists David Dadds, administrator of the department of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and Nathaniel Jones III, chief financial and administrative officer of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation at Dartmouth College, made campus visits the week of Nov. 10-14. Reports for the other criteria will be released as they are completed. Pakistan to be Forum presentation focus
UW-Eau Claire's Forum series will present writer, journalist and filmmaker Tariq Ali Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Zorn Arena. His address, "U.S. Foreign Policy: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan," will begin at 7:30 p.m. Ali's presentation will center on Pakistan, the likely home of Osama Bin Laden and safe house for the Taliban forces fighting NATO in Afghanistan. His most recent book, "The Duel: Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power," was published in September. Tariq Ali is a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio and writes for publications including The Nation, the Guardian, Counterpunch and the London Review of Books. Full story. New series offers business courses to nonmajors "We know there is a need on campus and in the community for quality basic business classes that will help people launch or enhance a variety of careers," said Cynthia Hofacker, an instructional program manager in the College of Business who is coordinating the new program. "Everyone — whether they are in the arts, education, health care or any other field — can benefit from knowing how to work with budgets or how to market themselves or their ideas." Full story. Staff member receives 'Distinguished Artist' title
UW-Eau Claire academic staff member Gene Leisz joined a small, elite group of state professionals this summer when he became the first person at UW-Eau Claire to be granted the state title of Distinguished Artist. The title acknowledges a professional who performs at a level of proficiency requiring extensive experience and advanced knowledge and skills. Leisz, a senior graphic artist in UW-Eau Claire's Learning and Technology Services, was trained as a fine artist and received a bachelor of fine arts degree in drawing and printmaking from UW-Eau Claire. Leisz has been a presenter at the Governor's Wisconsin Educational Technology Conference and has shared his talents with the community and region. He has taught digital photography workshops at the L.E. Phillips Senior Center, Senior Americans' Day, the local Cooperative Educational Service Agency, Cray Academy and other summer institutes for educators, and he has created scenery and taught scenery painting for the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild. He also has taught drawing, painting, sculpture and doll and puppet making to a wide range of audiences through continuing education courses and workshops. Full story. Psychology professors collaborate on new book Professor emeritus of psychology Dr. Steve Baumgardner did the research and writing for the book, and Dr. Mickey (Marie) Crothers, associate professor of psychology, edited the work. Crothers was Baumgardner's student when she was an undergraduate at UW-Eau Claire. The relatively new field of positive psychology is focused on developing a psychological and sociocultural understanding of the meaning and measure of happiness, as well as the means to living "a good life," Baumgardner said. The book, published in September by Pearson Publishing, is designed to serve as a primary text for an undergraduate college course in positive psychology.
