Tallant named president of Texas A&M-Kingsville NSF grant of $404,305 supports software project
Dr. Paul Wagner, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of computer science, has received a $404,305 National Science Foundation grant to develop portable and customizable software for hands-on, computer-intensive educational workshops. The three-year NSF grant is a phase-two grant that builds on work Wagner and other UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff completed through a previous NSF grant to create a laptop-based computer security workshop program. The new grant will allow the team to take the next step and make the program work in a wireless environment. Going wireless will greatly expand the uses of the program, Wagner said. Now used just for workshops on computer security, once wireless the program also will be usable for workshops on other computer science topics as well as for more general education uses, he said. Full story. Kate Hale is Campus Sustainability Fellow
Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich has named Dr. Kate Hale, a UW-Eau Claire adjunct assistant professor of English, as the university's Campus Sustainability Fellow. This is a new half-time appointment created as part of the implementation of the Centennial Plan, the university's strategic plan, which calls for identification and prioritizing campus improvements focusing on sustainability. “Dr. Hale has an intense interest in the environment," Levin-Stankevich said. "She demonstrated her organizational skills during a previous term as interim affirmative action officer, and I needed help in making sure that our sustainability efforts and my signing of the Campus Climate Commitment will be moved forward in the coming year.” As the Campus Sustainability Fellow, Hale will work with the chancellor’s Climate Commitment Advisory Group to identify ways to expand participation in sustainability efforts. She will help to coordinate and support sustainability efforts currently operating on campus and assist in the development of new efforts. She will serve as a liaison with other campuses, community organizations, government representatives and other local enterprises related to sustainability efforts. In addition, Hale will help track UW-Eau Claire's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint as part of the Presidents' Climate Commitment, a national effort at increasing sustainability. Full story. Marching band to play at Packers season opener
The UW-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band will perform a halftime show during the Green Bay Packers season opener against the Minnesota Vikings Sept. 8 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The band's director, Dr. Randal Dickerson, a UW-Eau Claire associate professor of music, recently received word that an opening for the halftime slot was available. The last-minute opening occurred when a retirement ceremony to honor former Packers quarterback Brett Favre was cancelled after Favre's recent decision not to retire and his subsequent trade by the Packers to the New York Jets. "The Packers media director called me on Wednesday morning during our practice at Carson Park," Dickerson said. "Knowing it was a call from Green Bay, I took the phone call with the band watching and listening. At the end of the call I gave a 'thumbs up' gesture to the band, and they all screamed." The Sept. 8 performance will be the Blugold Marching Band's second appearance at a Green Bay Packers home game. The group first performed at Lambeau Field in October 2004. Full story.
