Faculty/academic staff workshops and programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is sponsoring a series of workshops this semester. Deadlines for submitting proposals also are noted.

Workshops:
        • A session providing information on the Faculty Sabbatical Leave Program will be held Aug. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Eagle Room of Davies Center.
        • A session providing information on grant-writing tips and strategies will be held Aug. 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

Program Deadlines:
        • The Academic Staff Professional Development Program deadline for the first competition is Sept. 2.
        • The Faculty/Student Research Collaboration and Diversity Mentoring Program Grants deadline is Sept. 15.
        • The Faculty Sabbatical Leave Program deadline is Sept. 15.

Curriculum and Instruction
Sue McIntyre had her article titled "Best Practices in Teaching Vocabulary to English Language Learners" published in the summer 2008 issue of the Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal. The article was co-authored by UW-Eau Claire master's graduate Lynn Emmons, who is the coordinator of the English Language Learning Program in the Barron Public Schools. McIntyre also had her article titled "Dividing and Conquering: Successful Writing Processes for Adult Learners" published in the summer 2008 issue of the Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal. The article, a product of work done while McIntyre was on sabbatical leave in spring 2008, was co-authored by Caroline Beverstock, director of Project Read at the San Mateo (Calif.) Public Library.

Jill Markgraf facilitated a roundtable session titled “Future of the Reference Desk: Staffing, Training, Priorities” at the One System, One Library UW Library Staff annual conference June 4 in Madison. Markgraf also presented a session titled “Who's on First? Trends in Staffing the Academic Library Reference Desk” at the Reference Renaissance Conference Aug. 4-6 in Denver, Colo.
