'Cultural Perspectives of the Deaf' to be
luncheon focus

Classified Staff logoKristin Scheibe, an American Sign Language and deaf culture instructor at UW-Eau Claire, will present “Cultural Perspectives of the Deaf” from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at a brown bag luncheon in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. All members of the campus community are welcome at this presentation sponsored by the Classified Staff Professional Development Committee.

The presentation will introduce the deaf community as a linguistic and cultural minority group. It will demonstrate the various roles of people who are deaf within the larger society as related to political activism, laws, access to information, educational philosophies and communication systems. In addition, it will focus on the historical influences in the lives of American deaf people and the lives of others.

Scheibe grew up as the only deaf child in a hearing family. She graduated from the Iowa School for the Deaf, attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and majored in photography, and earned her bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language studies from Metropolitan State University. Scheibe now is pursuing a master’s degree in UW-Eau Claire's master of education-professional development program. Go to top of page
