Institute on Race and Ethnicity to sponsor symposium on supporting and retaining diverse faculty
The UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity will sponsor a two-day symposium titled "Supporting and Retaining Diverse Faculty: Research, Scholarship, Mentoring and Tenure" April 16-17 at UW-Milwaukee. The symposium has a twofold purpose: 1) scholarly research presentations by UW System faculty members who are former or current recipients of the IRE’s Faculty Diversity Research Awards; and 2) Forums involving junior and tenured faculty, FDRA mentors and campus administrators regarding the tenure process, mentoring, publications, extramural funding, recruitment and retention, campus climate and the diversification of our faculties.

The IRE is working with Teresa O’Halloran of the Affirmative Action Office and English faculty member David Shih, the campus equity, diversity and inclusivity fellow, to help assemble a team of attendees from UW-Eau Claire. Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

• Feb. 11: James Walker, mathematics, and Gary Don, music and theatre arts, "Connections Between Mathematics and Music."•
• Feb. 18: Deb Pattee, curriculum and instruction, and Lance Dalleck, kinesiology, "Ms. Adventures in SELWT: Self Esteem, Leadership, Wellness and Teaming with Young Women."

ORSP program deadlines
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.

• The deadline for Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Grants, University Research and Creative Activity and the Kell Container Corp. Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research is Feb. 16.

Center for International Education 
Susan Lochner has been elected chair-elect for the Wisconsin Association of International Educators. She will serve in that position until December 2009, and then will serve as chair until December 2010. Susan recently ended her term as the education abroad representative for the WAIE.

Learning and Technology Services
Rick Mickelson’s photograph "Electric Conductor," at right, earned a third place award in the latest University Photographer’s of America Association monthly image competition. The photo shows UW-Eau Claire student Anthony Meehl conducting The Singing Statesmen during the group's fall concert.
