Commencement ceremonies set for Dec. 15
UW-Eau Claire commencement exercises for 687 students will begin at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Zorn Arena. Candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and candidates for master's degrees will receive degrees during the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Candidates from the College of Business, College of Education and Human Sciences, and College of Nursing and Health Sciences will receive degrees during the 2 p.m. ceremony. Allotted tickets are available only to graduates and must be obtained at the Service Center prior to the ceremonies. No tickets are required for remote site broadcasts of the ceremonies, which may be viewed in the Davies Theatre of Davies Center. The ceremonies also will be broadcast live via Web video streaming. A reception for graduates and guests will follow each ceremony in the Spruce-Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Full story. Faculty, academic staff announce retirements

The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association will present awards to seven alumni and one friend of the university Dec. 15 at a special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with commencement. Read the recent news release for more details on the following recipients: Mark Fuhrmann '80 will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation in a manner that brings credit to the recipients and UW-Eau Claire. Cathy Sultan will receive the Honorary Alumnus Award, presented to nonalumni who have demonstrated great love of and service to UW-Eau Claire. Patrick Dennis '65 will receive the Lifetime Excellence Award, presented to UW-Eau Claire alumni who have demonstrated longtime and successful commitment to their careers and communities. Meghan Marx '00, Scott Pingel '96 and Capt. Shaun Westphal '97 will receive the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, which acknowledges special achievements and great promise of alumni who are within 15 years of their graduation from UW-Eau Claire. Robert Webb '74 and Randall Wilber '79 will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional or personal achievements or service to UW-Eau Claire.
Student receives full scholarship to join voyage on The Scholar Ship UW-Eau Claire is well represented in a new international study program that brings students from diverse cultural backgrounds together to create a "transnational learning community" aimed at developing intercultural competence. Sophomore Nhia Vang, Wausau, will receive a full scholarship of $21,935 to participate in the January 2008 voyage of The Scholar Ship, an experiential-based program that integrates travel and education as students travel by sea from country to country over a 16-week semester. The Scholar Ship program awarded only two full scholarships nationwide, one in fall and one in spring, said Bruce Ouderkirk, director of Student Support Services. More than 200,000 students enrolled in Student Support Services or McNair programs were eligible to apply, he said. Julie Wright, a UW-Eau Claire junior geography major from Eagan, Minn., participated in the inaugural voyage of The Scholar Ship in September. Wright, who will return to UW-Eau Claire for the spring semester, was among a group of students offered $10,000 to help cover the costs of the trip. Full story. Human Diversity Expo to feature student research The expo, which will run from 4-5:15 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center, will feature projects designed by 140 students currently enrolled in "Social Foundations of Human Relations," a course taught by Dr. Ramona Gunter and Dr. Jill Pinkney Pastrana of the foundations of education department, and the "Ethnic-sensitive Social Work Practice" course taught by Dr. La Vonne Cornell-Swanson of the department of social work. Twelve candidates for UW-Eau Claire bachelor of fine arts degrees are displaying their works in a senior BFA art show. The exhibit will run through Sunday, Dec. 16, in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The exhibit includes illustrations, paintings, ceramics and graphic designs. Full story. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education has announced two position changes in Business Outreach Services. Jim Mishefske has been named the Small Business Development Center director. He works with partners, educational institutions, entrepreneurial networks and stakeholder groups to provide expertise and resources to prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout the region. Ann Rupnow was promoted to program manager of Business Outreach Services. She serves as Continuing Education's primary liaison to regional businesses. Full story. Two new AmeriCorps* VISTA members have been working in the Chippewa Valley since August, creating and strengthening partnerships between UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning and various governmental and nonprofit agencies for the benefit of the region. Chalsea Lane has been working with several agencies, including the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Western Dairyland, Restorative Justice and Choose After Care, to strengthen and improve existing ex-offender reentry programs and look at alternatives to incarceration in this area. Zachary Barnes is working on improving support services for low-income families and aging adults by partnering with agencies like the Family Resource Center and the L.E. Phillips Senior Center. The new VISTA members are supported in part by a new project grant through Wisconsin Campus Compact and the AmeriCorps* VISTA Community Based Learning Project I. Don Mowry, director of the Center for Service-Learning, submitted the successful grant, and his office acts as a host site, providing supervision, workspace, equipment and some minimal transportation and professional development costs for the VISTA workers, who will work full-time for at least one year. McIntyre Libary begins special extended hours
McIntyre Library will be open 24 hours this week and next (finals week). The extended hours are as follows:
The library will be closed Saturday through Tuesday, December 22-25. Free coffee, sponsored by McIntyre Library and University Catering, will be available to students studying in the library from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, Dec. 16-20.

Cabaret XXX tickets go on sale today Inclement weather policy In response to local weather conditions, the chancellor may release employees. In such instances, no employee will be required to remain at work. Employees covered by a labor agreement should check their respective bargaining agreements for specifics about excusing employees from work and related issues. Employees not covered by a labor agreement may use vacation, compensatory time, personal holidays or leave without pay to cover time lost if they are ordered to leave work or if they request or are allowed to be excused from work when they believe that weather conditions or emergency situations make it unsafe to get to or remain at work. Local media will be notified if the chancellor decides to cancel classes. However, announcements by local media are advisory only. At its Dec. 6-7 meeting in Madison, the UW System Board of Regents approved a new sick leave policy for faculty and academic staff. The policy requires faculty and academic staff to report any sick leave, even if their classes or office hours are covered by another staff member. This change will affect 18,000 employees and will become effective Jan. 1, 2008. See the sick leave policy resolutions passed by the board on pages 59-61 of the online 
This year marks the diamond anniversary of Cabaret, which will feature a musical revue showcasing four decades of music, beginning with the 1970s. The show will feature performers from the Concert Choir, jazz ensembles, The Singing Statesmen, University Symphony Orchestra and Women's Concert Chorale. Performances will be held in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. 
In general, when inclement weather threatens operations at UW-Eau Claire, the university will remain open to the extent possible. If necessary, the chancellor may close the university to the public or cancel classes, but state employees will be expected to report to work.
