Register by Dec. 19 for Classified Staff Day
UW-Eau Claire classified staff members, including limited term employees, are invited to attend Classified Staff Day Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008.

The event will include an introduction by Provost and Vice Chancellor Steve Tallant, a variety of workshops, lunch and prizes. More information about the event is available online.

Those interested in attending should send the registration form and $27 fee to Barb Bowers, Human Resources, Schofield 220, by Dec. 19. Classified staff members may apply to the Classified Staff Professional Development Fund to cover the cost of the fee. Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters
seeks fellow nominations
The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters is now accepting nominations for fellows. Fellows are selected for their qualities of judgment, perceptiveness and breadth of knowledge of how literature, art and science contribute to the cultural life and welfare of Wisconsin. Their careers are marked by a high order of discovery; technological accomplishments; creative productivity in literature, poetry or the fine or practical arts; historical analysis; legal or judicial interpretation; or philosophical thinking. They also must have had significant involvement with Wisconsin, whether by working here, living here or having their achievements affect the intellectual and/or cultural life of the state.

ORSP program deadlines announced
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces deadlines for the following programs.

Program deadlines:
        • The deadline for Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Grants, University Research and Creative Activity and the Kell Container Corp. Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research is Feb. 15, 2008.

Foreign Languages/Honors Program
Nuria Hoff (Foreign Languages) and Paul Hoff (Foreign Languages/Honors Program) have had the "Aventura 1: Grammar and Vocabulary Exercises" workbook published. The workbook is the first in a series of three that the Hoffs will develop for EMC Publishing.

Geography and Anthropology
Timothy Bawden recently had a chapter titled "A Geographical Perspective on Nineteenth Century German Immigration to Wisconsin" published in the book "Wisconsin German Land and Life," University of Wisconsin Press.

UW-Eau Claire geography majors Phil Larson, Patrick Dryer, Jake McDonald and Eric Pascal along with co-authors Harry Jol, Mitchell Craig, Detlef Warnke and Lora Teitler (all from California State University, East Bay) presented a poster titled “High Resolution GPR Investigation of a Lake Manly Shoreline Deposit, Death Valley, California" at the 2007 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting Oct. 28-31 in Denver, Colo. The poster abstract was published in the meeting's Abstracts with Programs, Vol. 39, No. 6, page 561.

Geology
J. Brian Mahoney is the principal investigator and Robert Hooper and Lori Snyder were co-authors on a project titled "Distribution and Controls of Economic Mineralization along Intermontane/Coast Belt Boundary, Whitesail Lake map area, British Columbia." Four new maps, the final deliverables for the project, recently were released. The project was co-funded by Geoscience BC, the Geological Survey of Canada, UW-Eau Claire and the University of British Columbia. More information.

Learning and Technology Services
Rick Mickelson's photo "The Saving Stretch," at left, earned first place in the sports division of the University Photographers Association of America competition for images taken in October. The photograph shows UW-Eau Claire senior soccer goalkeeper Liz Weirick stretching full length to tip the ball away from the goal.

Condolences
Condolences to the family of Gale Crouse. Crouse, a retired member of the foreign languages faculty, died Dec. 7 in Eau Claire. Full obituary.

Condolences to the family of Katharyn Savides. Savides, who was a lecturer in the UW-Eau Claire English department for many years between 1970 and 1993, died Dec. 2 in Mondovi. Full obituary.
