Call for faculty/staff nominations for resident assistants
UW-Eau Claire Housing and Residence Life encourages faculty and staff to identify students who are highly motivated and who exhibit strong leadership skills and a genuine interest in helping others as possible candidates for resident assistant positions for spring semester. Any faculty or staff member who would like to nominate a student to receive an RA application may submit the student's name to Deb Newman, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, starting Oct. 1. Applications from the RA candidates to the respective residence halls are due by noon Monday, Oct. 15. For more information, contact Newman at newmandl@uwec.edu or 715-836-3674. Go to top of page

Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

        Oct. 10: Jill Ferguson, Materials Science Center, "Materials Science Center at UW-Eau Claire — Stimulating Growth in the Chippewa Valley and Beyond."
        Oct. 15: Sue Peck, nursing, "Energy Work: Expansion of Health Care." Note: This forum will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Potawatomi Room, Davies Center.

Advising and New Student Initiatives
Signe Matson and Jacqueline Bonneville presented "Advising Through the First Year: A UW-Eau Claire Model" at the 11th Annual Wisconsin Academic Advising Association Conference Sept. 21 at UW-River Falls. Go to top of page

Tess Onwueme's 1993 play "Parables for a Season" is scheduled for a world premiere in Khartoun, Sudan, beginning in December. American stage director Mark Weber has been appointed to direct the international production, which is being sponsored by the DAL Group and staged under the auspices of the KICS Theatre in Sudan. Onwueme has been invited to collaborate in the production as an honored guest of KICS and in her capacity as playwright and performing arts consultant. Go to top of page

Geography and Anthropology
UW-Eau Claire student Eric Pascal, Harry Jol, Richard Freund (University of Hartford), Phil Reeder (University of South Florida) and Paul Bauman (Worley Parson Komex) presented a paper titled "GPR Investigation of Archaeological Sites: Preliminary Results from Tel Yavne and Appollonia, Israel" at the 103rd Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers April 17-21 in San Francisco, Calif. The abstract of the presentation was published on the conference CD-ROM, page 488. Go to top of page

Sean Hartnett (geography and anthropology), David Lonzarich (biology), Evan Weiher (biology), Douglas Faulkner (geography and anthropology), Mary Ruth Lonzarich and Garry Running (geography and anthropology) presented their paper, "The Confluence Center for Lower Chippewa River Valley Study: Working to Conserve and Promote the Lower Chippewa River Valley, West-central Wisconsin," at Current Perspective, 5th Canadian River Heritage Conference, held June 10-14 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sociology
Tarique Niazi's essay "Afghanistan and the International Community" was translated into French and published in a bilingual journal, Alternatives International, published in Montreal, Canada. The electronic version of the essay is available online. Originally, it appeared in Washington-based Foreign Policy in Focus. Earlier, Olivia Ward interviewed Niazi on the same subject for Canada's largest-circulation newspaper, the Toronto Star. The article quoting Niazi can be accessed on the Star's Web site.
