Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.
• Sept. 19: April Bleske-Rechek, psychology, "Can (Young) Men and Women Be Just Friends? The Primacy of Human Mating in Cross-Sex Friendships."
• Sept. 26: Eva Santos-Phillips, Latin American Studies, "Latinas Documenting Life."

ORSP program deadlines
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.
Program Deadlines:
• The Faculty/Student Research Collaboration and Diversity Mentoring Program Grants deadline is Sept. 17.
• The Faculty Sabbatical Leave Program deadline is Sept. 17. 
Communication Sciences and Disorders
Thomas King (emeritus) and his wife, Debra King (formerly of UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education), will be leading a series of "Science Pizza Labs" at the Solon Springs Community Center throughout the year. The free labs, open to adult learners, involve a variety of mathematical, physical, human and biological sciences. More information is available online. 
Geography and Anthropology
Harry Jol, Curt Peterson and Ken Cruikshank (both of Portland State University) presented a paper titled “Very Fine Grained-, Very Coarse Grained- and Internally Stratified-Tsunami Deposits: Geologic Constraints on Flow Conditions.” The presentation was given at the International Workshop on Fundamentals of Coastal Effects of Tsunamis Dec. 26-28 in Hilo, Hawaii. The abstract of the paper was published on the Web. 
Public Health Professions
Dale Taylor (emeritus) gave a presentation titled "Biomedical Music Therapy Origins, Research and Applications" at the European Music Therapy Congress Aug. 18 in The Netherlands. 
Births and Adoptions
Congratulations to Melissa Bonstead-Bruns, sociology, and her husband, Troy, on the adoption of daughter Sophie Celeste Louise Bruns. Sophie, who was born April 25 and brought home July 6, joins brother Tyler, 4. 
Condolences
Condolences to Art Gulig, music and theatre arts, whose mother, Almeda Gulig, died Aug. 28 in Sheboygan. Full obituary.
