Final strategic plan sets forth new university vision "The vision this plan sets before us is a bold one: We will become the premier undergraduate learning community in the upper Midwest," said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich in an e-mail message to the university community. "(It is) a tall order, but one I believe we are fully capable of achieving, based on our long history of excellence and the demonstrated commitment of our faculty and staff." Grant funds program to improve Eau Claire teachers' cultural competency, intervention skills
A new joint program between UW-Eau Claire and the Eau Claire Area School District will help classroom teachers and university student teachers better meet the learning needs of students of color, according to the program's creator. The grant-funded program, "Culturally Congruent Response to Intervention," will provide teachers and student teachers with cultural competency skills and expertise on intervention and techniques, said Dr. Dwight C. Watson, associate dean of teacher education at UW-Eau Claire and author of the $164,000 UW System three-year grant that will fund the program. "The project gives teachers and university student teachers the skills to identify struggling students early, and knowledge of the appropriate instructional interventions in the regular classroom rather than the special education classroom," Watson said. Several UW-Eau Claire geography students who participated in Dr. Harry Jol's spring semester field seminar capstone class have received full scholarships to attend graduate school in the fall. The class traveled in mid-March to New Zealand, where students used their research skills to complete an investigative group project and to complete individual topical research papers. "It was an amazing experience," said senior Jackie Ebert, who has received a full scholarship and graduate assistant position with a living stipend at Missouri State University, where she will pursue a master's degree in geospatial sciences. "Our trip was truly unique in that we were afforded the opportunity to use our knowledge overseas in an environment that was strange to us. "I talk to many other geography students that attend other schools and they don't have one-quarter the experience that I have attained from this department," Ebert said. "I believe that attending UW-Eau Claire afforded me opportunities that I would not have been able to receive elsewhere." Full story.
Forensics student places sixth in nation
UW-Eau Claire forensics student Eric Plantenberg, a junior from Monroe, represented Wisconsin at the Interstate Oratory Contest April 24-26 at the state capitol in Madison. Plantenberg placed sixth in the nation with a strong performance in the semi-finals and in the finals. He competed against 88 individuals representing 35 states. "We are so proud of him for this achievement," said forensics director Karen Morris. "For being one of the top competitors in the state for persuasive speaking, he was chosen as one of two people to represent the state of Wisconsin." Full story.
Devroy winner makes transatlantic trip to accept award Boschma, a native of Colby, is studying abroad in England for the spring semester but didn't want to miss the opportunity to accept the award, which is presented to a UW-Eau Claire journalism student who shows exceptional promise and ability. The fellowship includes a three-week residency at The Washington Post, a $1,400 scholarship to defray the costs of the residency and a summer internship at a Wisconsin newspaper. Boschma will work at The Post during her winter break in January 2009. Full story. Phi Kappa Phi grants support student trips abroad
Three members of the UW-Eau Claire chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will travel internationally this summer or fall with the help of awards from the honor society. Junior Heather Nichols, a nursing student from Pittsville, and junior Wendy Weimerskirch, a sociology major from Plymouth, Minn., received $1,000 Phi Kappa Phi study abroad travel grants from the Phi Kappa Phi national organization. Nichols will spend eight weeks in Costa Rica this summer, while Weimerskirch will travel to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the fall semester. Weimerskirch also received a $500 award from the local Phi Kappa Phi chapter at UW-Eau Claire. She will use the grant to buy and distribute mosquito nets as protection from malaria-carrying mosquitoes when she travels to Uganda this summer. Another $500 local grant was awarded to graduate nursing student Laurie Agrimson, West St. Paul, Minn. She will use the grant to help pay expenses when she attends the 19th International Nursing Research Congress Focusing on Evidence-Based Practice in Singapore in July. She will then conduct independent research in Hiroshima, Japan, on the long-term health effects related to radiation exposure. The sixth-seeded UW-Eau Claire softball team defeated second-seeded UW-Oshkosh 6-0 on Sunday, May 11, to win the NCAA Division III regional tournament and move on to the national championship in Salem, Va. The national championship starts Friday, May 16.
