Faculty, academic staff invited to ORSP reception
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is hosting a reception honoring faculty and academic staff who received or applied for grants during the past year as well as the members of the committees that assist the office in promoting scholarly activities. The reception will be held April 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Chancellor Levin-Stankevich will be among those extending their appreciation at the reception. Student Research Day awards will be presented at the faculty/academic staff reception. Go to top of page

UW-Eau Claire excellence medalMay 7 reception to honor retirees and those reaching career milestones
UW-Eau Claire's Service Recognition and Retirement Reception will be held Wednesday, May 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Employees who are approaching milestone years of service and those who are retiring will be recognized at 3:30 p.m. The event is open to all faculty and staff. Go to top of page

United Way seeks event volunteers, participants
United Way logo• IMPACT Tour: The United Way of Greater Eau Claire will host the United Way IMPACT Tour from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, May 8. The tour will include visits to six United Way-funded program sites, where participants will see first hand how the programs are making a difference in the Eau Claire area. Tour stops will include Literacy Volunteers of America - Chippewa Valley, 9 a.m.; Children's Service Society of Wisconsin, 10 a.m.; Chippewa Valley Free Clinic, 11 a.m.; The Community Table, noon; L.E. Phillips Career Development Center, 1 p.m.; and L.E. Phillips Senior Center, 2 p.m. Participants wishing to take the entire tour may board the Cody Limousines trolley at 8:45 a.m. at the Ramada Inn City Center. National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive: Volunteers are needed for this food drive on Saturday, May 10, to collect food with letter carriers, organize food at the post office and ship food to local food banks. Those interested should contact Jan Porath at jporath@unitedwayeauclaire.org.

Taste of Eau Claire: Volunteers are sought for the United Way's annual Taste of Eau Claire event to be held from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Phoenix Park. Contact Jan Porath, jporath@unitedwayeauclaire.org, for volunteer job descriptions. Go to top of page

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following workshop and program deadlines.

Workshop:
        A Faculty Development Workshop to discuss the Faculty Sabbatical Leave Program will be held May 7 from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. as a brown bag lunch session in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

Program Deadlines:
       • The Academic Staff Professional Development Program deadline is June 1.
       The
National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend Incentive deadline is June 6.

Computer Science
Michael Morrison, Joline Morrison and Daniel Ernst attended the Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium April 11-12 in La Crosse. The conference was dedicated to providing higher education participants an educational experience focused on the integration of computer-based technology in the teaching and learning processes of all disciplines. Michael Morrison presented a paper titled “Exploring the Web Programming Jungle,” and Joline Morrison’s paper was titled “Using Clickers to Enhance Computer Science Classes." Daniel Ernst accompanied two of his students, Joseph Myre and Darren Kulp, who also presented papers. Myre’s paper was titled “Enhancing the Price/Performance for a Clustered Multiprocessor System,” and Kulp’s paper was titled “ISOMER – Augmenting Software Testing Confidence by Automated Comparison with a Lightweight Model." Kulp also received a Best Paper Award. Go to top of page

Geography and Anthropology
Ingolf Vogeler and Brady Foust had their paper titled “Regional Minority Variations in the Conterminous United States” published in the Journal of Maps, 2008, 1-4. Foust also co-authored two papers, which were presented at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers April 15-19 in Boston, Mass. The paper "Space-Time Shifts in Rank-Size Primacy: 1790-2000” was co-authored with UW-Eau Claire student Rachel Kjos, and “Primary Air Passenger Destinations as Indicators of the Urban Hierarchy” was co-authored with Lisa Theo (UW-Stevens Point).
