Nominations sought for Excellence in Performance Award
The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee invites nominations for the annual Excellence in Performance Award to be given in fall 2008. The UW-Eau Claire Foundation will present $1,500 to the recipient. Any administrative and/or professional member of the academic staff with a 50 percent or greater appointment may be nominated for the award. And, any member of the faculty, academic or classified staffs, administration or student body is welcome to nominate someone.

The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee will review all nominations and forward a recommendation to Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. Nominees will be considered for three years.

Transformative Learning Webinar set for March 25
The Network for Excellence in Teaching will host a Webinar on transformative learning Tuesday March 25, at 1 p.m. in Old Library 1132. The Webinar will feature a conversation between Maryellen Weimer, editor of the longstanding newsletter The Teaching Professor and Patricia Cranton, a noted authority on transformative learning. Weimer and Cranton will discuss the nature of transformative learning and the classroom conditions, assignments and activities that promote and cultivate transformative learning. The interview also will explore how transformative learning affects the growth and development of teachers themselves. Webinar participants will have an opportunity to ask their own questions of the presenters. Those interested in attending should send e-mail to net@uwec.edu.

OPID to offer conference development and undergraduate teaching and learning grants
Conference Development Grants — The UW System Office of Professional and Instructional Development offers grants of up to $1,000 for development and sponsorship of local, regional and systemwide workshops and conferences focused on the improvement of teaching. Proposals are for events taking place between July 1 and Dec. 31. Conference development grant proposals must be submitted to Linda Carpenter, NET, by March 28 and will be submitted by NET staff to OPID by the UW System deadline.

Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Grants — The Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Grants for 2008-09, "Institutional Projects 'Going Systemwide,'" will be used to bring to the UW System level successful examples of campus initiatives that foster teaching and learning. The goals for the grants are:

    • To make campus-based projects with proven success easily accessible for systemwide implementation.
    • To disseminate good ideas, share best practices and build on projects with demonstrated success.
    • To build interinstitutional communities of practice around teaching and learning issues.
    • To respond to emerging priorities across the UW System.
    • To continue OPID’s goal of developing a distributed leadership network of faculty development across the UW System.

Grant funding is available for up to $40,000 per project. Projects must build from demonstrably successful programs that are either currently in existence or have had recent success. Roger Wareham, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, is available to assist in budget development. Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Grant proposals should be sent by e-mail to Linda Carpenter, NET, by April 4 and will be submitted by NET staff to OPID by the UW System deadline.

NET announces Faculty College 2008
Faculty College 2008, sponsored by the UW System Office of Professional and Instructional Development, brings together approximately 100 faculty and instructional academic staff members from throughout the UW System for three days of intensive exploration of teaching, learning and curricular issues. The program will be held May 27-30 at UW-Richland in Richland Center. A preliminary schedule and seminar details are available online.

All UW System institutions have been invited to nominate four participants. Those interested in attending should contact Carpenter by March 24.

Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

        • March 12: Ethan Wickman, music and theatre arts, "Writing Pieces from Pieces: A Postmodern Composer's Experience." Note: This presentation will be held in the Tamarack Room, Davies Center.
        • April 2: Matthew Waters, foreign languages/history, "The First World Empire: Genesis of a Superpower."

Fred King recently had his paper titled "Operator Basis for Analytic Signal Construction" published in the journal Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, Vol. 19, pages 131-137, 2008.

Don Christian and Rita Sommers-Flanagan (The University of Montana) co-authored an article titled "Shaping the Professoriate One Class at a Time," which was published in the fall 2007 issue of Thought and Action.

Winifred Morse (emerita), College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Mickey Crothers, Psychology; Gloria Fennell, Social Work; and Katherine Schneider (emerita), Counseling Services, co-authored a paper titled "Implications of Terrorist Attacks and Other Campus Deaths for Ongoing Student Support Needs," which was published in Illness, Crisis & Loss, 2008, Vol. 16, No. 1, pages 65-84.

Asha Sen's article "Feminist Ethnographies of Desire and Resistance in Lalithambika Antherjanam's 'The Goddess of Revenge' and Ismat Chugtai's 'Lihaaf' was published in the peer-reviewed journal South Asian Review, Vol. 28.2, 2007, pages 165-181.

Geography and Anthropology
Harry Jol was a co-coauthor with Andy Mumpy (University of Alberta), Bill Kean (UW-Milwaukee) and John Isbell (UW-Milwaukee) on a publication titled "Architecture and Sedimentology of an Active Braid Bar in the Wisconsin River: Based on 3-D Ground Penetrating Radar." The article was published in Geological Society of America Special Publication 432, pages 111-132.

Learning and Technology Services/Chemistry
Rick Mickelson earned two awards in this month's University Photographers' Association of America image competition. “Island of Women” took first place in the personal vision category, and “The Jumping Flame Trick” earned third place in the science and research category. The "jumping flame" photo was taken for Bob Eierman (Chemistry) to illustrate his article “A Candle in the Wind,” which will appear in the April 2008 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education. A sequential version of the photo was chosen to be the cover image for the issue. See photos below.

Mathematics
Mohamed Elgindi and Robert Langer, emeritus, co-authored a paper titled "Temperature Balance of Polymer Flow Through Extrusion Dies," which Elgindi presented at the International Polyolefins Conference 2008 Feb. 24-28 at the Wyndham Greenspoint Hotel in Houston, Texas. The conference was sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Music and Theatre Arts
Dale Taylor (emeritus) was re-elected to a second term as secretary of the Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care at the board's February meeting in Madison. Taylor also has been admitted as a member of the international Music Therapy Neurology Network and the international Music Therapy for Addictions Network.

Condolences
Condolences to the family of Eunice Gavin. Gavin, a retired member of the UW-Eau Claire maintenance staff, died Feb. 25 in Eau Claire. Full obituary.
