Ann Lapp
to serve as interim associate vice chancellor for student development
and diversity
Beginning Feb. 1, Ann Lapp will serve as UW-Eau Claire's interim associate vice chancellor for student development and diversity. She was named to the post following the departure of Kimberly Barrett, who served as associate vice chancellor since 2003 and has accepted an administrative position at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. Lapp will serve in the interim position until a new vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students is named following a national search. Lapp, who served as UW-Eau Claire’s dean of students and director of academic and career services from 1996-2003, retired in 2003 with emeritus status after 34 years of service to the university. Her career at UW-Eau Claire also included teaching organizational and interpersonal communication and public speaking in the department of communication and journalism, as well as the administrative positions of director of educational opportunity and director of student support services. Lapp has a bachelor's degree from UW-River Falls and a master’s degree from UW-Eau Claire. Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich has appointed a
search committee for the vice chancellor for student affairs and dean
of students position. Members of the committee are Analisa DeGrave,
Jesse Dixon, Bob Eierman, Tonja Englund, Charles Farrell, Kirby Harless
and Jodi Thesing-Ritter. Two students also will be named to the committee
by the Student Senate. The committee will begin its work immediately.
Super Bowl
ads linked to stock market success
The aggregate stock price of publicly traded firms that ran in-game Super Bowl advertisements beat the Standard & Poors 500 performance in 10 of the last 12 years, according to UW-Eau Claire marketing professors and research partners Dr. Chuck Tomkovick and Dr. Rama Yelkur. The researchers' latest study has been featured or linked to in online media nationwide, including USA Today, ABC News, The Business Journal of Milwaukee, the Baltimore Business Journal and StreetInsider.com. See "UW-Eau Claire in the News" for a more complete listing. "Investing in Super Bowl ads seems to be shock resistant," Tomkovick said. "In each of the four years the S&P declined during the period of study, Super Bowl stocks beat the S&P 500." Most Super Bowl-related research has focused on the likeability of the ads rather than on financial factors, Yelkur said. "This study examines the financial performance
of the firms that invest in Super Bowl ads and demonstrates there is
a net positive effect, regardless of how likeable the ads were scored
in USA Today's annual Ad Meter publication," Yelkur said. Full

Years of research yield geological
publication More than 10 years of research conducted by UW-Eau Claire geology professor Dr. Kent Syverson and 14 geology students came to fruition in late December with the publication of Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Bulletin 103, "Pleistocene Geology of Chippewa County, Wisconsin." The 53-page illustrated bulletin describes the sediments, landforms and glacial history of Chippewa County. It makes, for the first time, that information accessible to everyone from land-use professionals and land owners to area teachers or outdoor enthusiasts interested in knowing more about local geology. Syverson noted that $63,000 in grant funding from
WGNHS and the Chippewa County Land Conservation Department supported

first Freshman Provocation Organizers of the event said they hope it will "provoke" students to seriously consider the concept of liberal education as vital to their futures. The goal is to inspire and educate students about the power of a liberal education in the 21st century information age. Four faculty members — Dr. Evan Weiher, professor
of biology; Dr. April Bleske-Rechek, assistant professor of psychology;
Dr. Jim Phillips, professor of chemistry; and Dr. Marty Wood, professor
of English — will speak about how their own liberal educations
have impacted their personal and professional lives and why they advocate
that students should work intentionally to develop broad content knowledge
and skills across disciplines. Full

features campus maps, directions, tours Foster
Gallery exhibit features illustrators' works
UW-Eau Claire's Foster Gallery will present "Meaning and Metaphor," a new exhibit featuring the work of four renowned illustrators, Jan. 31 through Feb. 21. An opening reception will begin at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 in the gallery. The exhibit features works by Guy Billout, Anita Kunz, Jason Holley and Daniel Bejar. Billout will talk to students about his work at 10 a.m. Feb. 1 in Room 105 of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The show will demonstrate how illustrators take contemporary issues and condense them into powerful single images that make a statement and reflect the times in which we live, said Ned Gannon, assistant professor of art & design and curator of the exhibit. Reminder: Draft
strategic plan preview is Feb. 5 The University Planning Committee created the draft plan based on the ideas of the strategic planning work groups and feedback from faculty, staff and students during the charrettes last fall. (See the strategic planning Web site for more information.) On Feb. 5 the committee will share copies of the draft plan, outline the key ideas and invite questions and comments. A continental breakfast will be served. All faculty, staff and students are welcome to come
when they can and stay as long as they like. Additional information
and discussion sessions with the committee will be scheduled in February.

Chance' campus campaign to kick off Donna and Jim Weber will serve as this year's campus campaign co-chairs. Donna Weber is UW-Eau Claire's director of human resources, and Jim Weber works in grounds services for Facilities Planning and Management. "I know the dollars donated to the campaign and the Foundation change students' lives," said Donna Weber. "Foundation support often makes a crucial difference between whether a student can attend or stay in school." Faculty and staff will receive additional information

to support lectures on Arab world issues
Cathy Sultan, a peace activist, author and UW-Eau Claire honorary alumna, and Dr. Kate Lang, associate professor and chair of the history department, have established the Arab World Lecture Fund through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to broaden students' education about the Middle East. The first speaker for the lecture fund will give a presentation in spring 2009. Many individuals from the Middle East who are living
in Eau Claire have donated to the fund because they believe education
about Arab world issues are essential given current world politics,
said Sultan, who received the honorary alumna award in December from
the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association for her work on Middle East peace
initiatives. Full

A
recently launched UW-Eau Claire "Maps, Directions and Tours"
Web site provides a "one-stop shop" for people seeking directions
to campus or information about specific university facilities. The site,
accessible from a link toward the bottom of the university home page,
includes five maps, directions to upper and lower campus as well as
to athletics facilities, links to four campus tours and a guide to campus
services. 
The
UW-Eau Claire Foundation is celebrating the 2008 leap year by launching
its "Leap at the Chance" campus campaign in February.
UW-Eau
Claire University Centers has entered into an agreement with Mosquito
Productions, a Minnesota company, to provide BigBox DVD rental kiosks
on campus for general use. Two rental kiosks — one on upper campus,
one on lower campus — will allow students, faculty, staff and
the public to rent DVD and next-generation high-definition titles. The
kiosks, in Davies Center's west lobby (near the Corner Store) and on
the first floor of Hilltop Center (near the ATM), began operating Jan.
24.
