Workshop on assessment plans for programs and departments to be offered
Academic Affairs and the Network for Excellence in Teaching are sponsoring a workshop titled "Developing Assessment Plans for Programs and Departments" on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. The workshop will be led by Barbara E. Walvoord, chair of the Provost's Advisory Committee on Assessment at the University of Notre Dame.

Walvoord will discuss feasible, practical and simple strategies for assessing student learning outcomes at programmatic and departmental levels. Workshop participants will receive a copy of her book "Assessment Clear and Simple."

Walvoord also will be available to meet with department teams from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Council Fire Room.

Motivational speaker Tom Kidd to present wellness program in January
UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff are invited to a morning of wellness and humor by Tom Kidd, a professional motivational and educational speaker, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Davies Center. The schedule for the morning is as follows:

• Social time with refreshments, Skylight Lounge, 8 to 8:30 a.m.
• "A Morning of Health, Wellness and Humor," part 1, with Tom Kidd, Davies Theatre, 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.
• Break, 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.
• "A Morning of Health, Wellness and Humor," part 2, with Tom Kidd, Davies Theatre, 10:15 to 11:30 a.m.

News from system Institute on Race and Ethnicity
The UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity, which serves as a catalyst for scholarly research and curricular innovation in racial/ethnic studies, has published its December E-Bulletin containing the latest news and information from the institute. Read the December E-Bulletin.

The institute also has issued a call for proposals for presentations at its statewide conference, "Immigration: Many Faces; Many Facets,” to be held April 26-27, 2006, at UW-Milwaukee. The deadline for proposal submissions is Friday, Dec. 22. More information.

Jack Bushnell had his memoir essay, "Laboratory Notes," about growing up with a biologist father, published in the literary journal Tampa Review, issue 31/32, 2006.

Joel Pace is the eighth recipient of the Maxwell Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship at UW-Eau Claire. Pace also co-edited a collection of essays with professors Lance Newman (California State University, San Marcos) and Chris Koenig-Woodyard (University of Toronto) that recently was published in University of Maryland's MLA-indexed, peer-reviewed online series "Sullen Fires Across the Atlantic: Essays in Transatlantic Romanticism," Romantic Circles Praxis Series, Romantic Circles, College Park, Md., 2006.

Geology
J. Brian Mahoney and co-authors R.J. Enkin and J. Baker recently had their paper titled "Paleomagnetic Signature of the Silverquick/Powell Creek Succession, South-Central British Columbia: Reaffirmation of Late Cretaceous Large-Scale Terrane Translation" published in "Paleogeography of the North American Cordillera: Evidence For and Against Large-Scale Displacements," edited by J.W. Haggart, J.W., R.J. Enkin and J.W.H. Monger, Geological Association of Canada, Special Paper 46, pages 201-220, 2006.
