Campus celebrates inauguration this Friday
UW-Eau Claire will celebrate the inaugura-tion of its seventh chief executive, Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich, at 3 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 27, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. All university faculty, staff and emeriti have been invited to attend the inauguration festivities. Those planning to attend should RSVP by returning their response cards to the Chancellor's Office, 204 Schofield Hall, or by completing the online guest RSVP form. University music ensembles will perform before the ceremony in the Haas Fine Arts Center foyer beginning at 2:15 p.m. Music during the ceremony will be provided by the University Symphony Orchestra, and the university's all-male chorus, The Singing Statesmen, will lead attendees in the national anthem and the UW-Eau Claire Alma Mater. A reception in the Haas Fine Arts Center foyer immediately following the ceremony also will include music by ensembles from UW-Eau Claire's department of music and theatre arts. Speakers during the ceremony will include Susan Harrison, University Senate chair; Chris Wagner, Student Senate president; Christopher Kirchman, recipient of UW-Eau Claire's 2005 Classified Staff Excellence in Performance Award; Robert McCoy, president of the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce; Dave Zien, Wisconsin Senate president pro tem; Jesus Salas, a member of the UW System Board of Regents; and Stephen Jordan, president of Metropolitan State College of Denver. UW System president Kevin Reilly will install Chancellor Levin-Stankevich and present him with the university medallion. UW-Eau Claire ranks high among producers of Fulbright Scholars With Fulbright awards to three of its graduates who applied while enrolled at the university, UW-Eau Claire is ranked 8th in the nation among master's level institutions producing U.S. student Fulbright Scholars in 2006-07, according to a list of top producer schools compiled by the Fulbright Program. No other Wisconsin college or university is included on the list of top master's level institutions. The list is featured in the Oct. 20 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. The 2006-07 Fulbright winners who applied to the Fulbright program while enrolled at UW-Eau Claire are Justin Van Ness, who graduated in December 2005 with a double major in political science and Spanish; Jenna Cushing-Leubner, a December 2005 graduate with majors in English and German; and Amanda Hill, who graduated in May with majors in biology and French. Teresa O'Halloran to assume affirmative action post
UW-Eau Claire has hired Eau Claire attorney Teresa O'Halloran as its assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action. She will join the university Nov. 1. As an attorney with the Ruder Ware law firm in Eau Claire, O'Halloran has concentrated her practice in employment law. She has advised employers on equal employment opportunity issues and conducted litigation in state and federal courts and administrative forums. O'Halloran is a graduate of the New York University School of Law. She earned her undergraduate degree at UW-Madison. The assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action is the affirmative action officer for the university. The position carries two primary responsibilities: (1) coordinating university efforts to achieve its goals in the areas of equal opportunity in employment, affirmative action and campus diversity; and (2) coordinating consultation with the UW System Office of General Counsel regarding university policies, public records and other areas as directed by the chancellor. New site takes prospective students on virtual tour The Web site was a cooperative project between the Admissions office, the Publications office, Learning and Technology Services, and the News Bureau, with current students taking the lead in development and implementation. Sawyer Butterfield, a senior computer science major from Ladysmith, developed the navigation and infrastructure for the site. Kristin Blake, a senior Spanish and ancient studies major from Appleton, and Courtney Kostick, a senior mass communication major from Hudson, wrote the text and advised on layout. Dr. Harold Koenig, co-director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center, will present two lectures on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at UW-Eau Claire. Koenig's presentations are sponsored by the Chippewa Valley Dialogue on Science and Religion initiative. Koenig's first presentation, "Religion, Spirituality and Health: Background, Research and Clinical Applications" will be a free lecture geared toward an audience of medical and mental heath professionals as well as nursing and pre-med students from 5 to 6:45 p.m. in Davies Theatre, Davies Center. Koenig also will present "Faith and Health: How Religious Beliefs Influence Mind and Body," from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Davies Theatre.
