UW-Eau Claire named a Best Midwestern College UW-Eau Claire is one of 163 schools to receive the "Best Midwestern College" designation and is included on a list of 150 Best Value Colleges. Kristina Anderson, executive director of enrollment services at UW-Eau Claire, said UW-Eau Claire continues to be a first-choice campus for talented students. "The faculty and staff work hard to nurture our students, and in an era of rising tuition across the country, UW-Eau Claire continues to be an excellent education value. The rights of children in South Africa will be the topic of a presentation by Andreis Viviers, a guest lecturer in UW-Eau Claire's department of social work, at noon Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. In his presentation, "For the Children: UNICEF and Children's Rights in South Africa," Viviers will discuss his current projects for UNICEF in South Africa and the surrounding nations of southern Africa. The focus of the project is children's participation in their own lives through involvement in planning for themselves. Viviers is a social worker employed by UNICEF South Africa. He currently supervises UW-Eau Claire social work student Alex Galston, an intern in a community development project in rural South Africa. Full story. Faculty, academic staff receive grants from Receiving curriculum development grants are Debra Barker, English, for the project “A Gathering of Spirits: American Indian Women Writers” and Linda Carpenter, communication sciences and disorders, for the project “Serving Racially, Ethnically, Culturally, and Linguistically Diverse Populations: A Proposal for a New Course in CSD.” Receiving campus activities grants are Beverly Soll, Activities and Programs office, and Toni Poll-Sorensen, music and theatre arts, for their project “Evidence: The Ronald K. Brown Dance Company”; Jerry Young, music and theatre arts, for the project “Residency by Jon Sass”; and Paul Kaldjian, geography and anthropology, for the project “Latinos Lecheros: A Symposium on the Critical Contribution of Mexicans to Western Wisconsin's Culture and Economy.” Full story. Campus installs lightning prediction system Three sets of warning horns and strobes have been installed around the UW-Eau Claire upper campus. UW-Eau Claire's Day of Caring event Sept. 15 launched the third annual theme basket raffle to benefit the United Way of Greater Eau Claire and its member agencies. Thirteen baskets created by UW-Eau Claire employees were displayed on the Central Campus Mall, and raffle tickets were sold for chances to win the baskets in a drawing to be held Sept. 29. Raffle tickets still can be purchased from the campus departments and offices sponsoring baskets, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29 in the east lobby of Davies Center.
