UW-Eau Claire again ranks among Midwest's best The 2007 edition of "America's Best Colleges" ranks UW-Eau Claire No. 4 among top regional public universities in the Midwest and 26th among all private and public institutions in the Midwest. The Midwest region includes schools in 12 states stretching from the Dakotas in the west to Missouri in the south and Ohio in the east. "This is a ringing endorsement of the fine work of our faculty, staff and supporters of the university as they have built a solid and continuing commitment to excellence," said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich, who became the university's chancellor June 1. "I am very impressed by how dedicated our faculty and staff are to their students. Every conversation centers on what they can do to make their students' time here even more valuable. Every school says it's student-centered, but not every school lives up to that claim. UW-Eau Claire definitely lives up to it." Full story.
All-employee breakfast to kick off academic year Read the full calendar for the opening days of the academic year. Regents approve state budget request, The regents also approved a 2007-09 biennial budget request that would allow the system to graduate more students, attract more college graduates to Wisconsin and help grow knowledge-economy jobs in the state. The budget proposal, titled "A Growth Agenda for Wisconsin," asks for an ongoing base operating budget increase of $120 million in state tax dollars, and student tuition would cover new programs and the university's existing costs. That is $90 million less than the regents' request two years ago. If the state fulfills the request, the average tuition increase would be less than 2.5 percent over the biennium - the lowest requested increases in at least 25 years. In other business, the regents approved resolutions in support of a proposed Hold Harmless Tuition Grant and the Veterans' Tuition Grant. Funding for both grant programs is expected to be included in the 2007-09 budget request of the Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB), but the programs would directly impact UW students. The board also voted to prevent university funds from being invested with companies that support or abet acts of genocide in the country of Sudan. Read the Day 1 and Day 2 news summaries for complete details on the regents' August meeting. Chemistry prof receives nearly $100,000 in grants
Dr. James Boulter, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of chemistry, recently received grants totaling nearly $100,000 to continue laboratory investigations of the atmospheres of Earth and Jupiter. Boulter, who joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty in 2004, and his co-investigator, Jochen Marschall of SRI International in California, received a three-year grant from NASA for their project titled "Laboratory Studies of Atomic Oxygen Effects on Ice Formation and Structure in the Mesophere." Boulter's share of the grant is $41,204. Boulter also was awarded a Research Corporation Cottrell College Science Award of $59,690 for his project "Laboratory Studies of Hydrocarbon Uptake on Mixed Ammonia Hydrate and Sulfide Ices Present in the Jovian Atmosphere." Jue Yang, a UW-Eau Claire senior business student from Manitowoc, has been awarded the Laurence A. and Frances L. Weinstein Scholarship for 2006-07 by the UW System. The Weinstein award pays resident tuition and segregated fees for one academic year. Yang is the first Hmong student to receive the prestigious scholarship, established in 1986 by UW System Regent Emeritus Laurence Weinstein and his wife, Frances, to recognize outstanding junior or senior minority business students. Yang was born in Laos and spent several years in a refugee camp in Thailand. She had no formal education prior to coming to the United States at age nine, and nobody in her family could read, write or speak English. "We were introduced to the United States as a land of opportunity," wrote Yang in her application letter. "By age eight, I was already thinking about getting an education. Because of this, I am very determined to achieve my goals. I work hard, commit an immense amount of time to my work and always push myself to go beyond my limits." Full story.
