Remember power-saving computer practices
CPU and monitorTo help reduce our costly electrical bills, the Physical Plant Planning Committee of the University Senate, Facilities Planning and Management, and Learning and Technology Services urges university employees to:

  1. Turn computer monitors and printers off at night. Do not turn off your CPU /tower. LTS has been remotely turning them to "stand by" mode automatically via Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS). Leaving the computer CPU /tower in "stand by" mode uses very little energy. The advantage of "stand by" mode is that the computer can be woken up remotely — for LTS to scan for viruses or for the user to control the computer remotely. Also, "stand by" mode allows for quick startup for the returning user. (Turn on the computer monitor, key CTRL-Alt-Delete simultaneously and enter your password, and all your settings, etc. are on immediately — no more "booting up" and loading.)
  2. For weekends and short vacations, turn off your monitor and printer and shut down your CPU.
  3. For an extended absence, like a longer vacation or absence for the winter or summer break, continue the practice of turning off your monitor and printer and shutting down your CPU. Be aware that for the first hour after the computer is eventually turned back on, it will be slow as some automatic system updating is performed. Go to top of page

Summer 2007 maintenance/construction projects
Planned utility outages on campus during summer 2007 will allow for preventive maintenance and repairs that prevent unplanned emergency outages due to breakdowns. See a schedule of summer outages and maintenance and construction projects. Go to top of page
