Regents approve updated admissions policy The policy requires campuses to employ a comprehensive, or "holistic," admissions review process. The process first considers a potential student's academic achievements. Applications of qualified students are also reviewed for evidence of leadership and/or community service; if an applicant is a military veteran, returning adult or nontraditional student; as well as socioeconomic background and status as a member of a historically underrepresented racial or ethnic group. Read the updated admissions policy, as well as summaries of Day 1 and Day 2 of the regents' February meeting in Madison. Also read Milwaukee Journal Sentinel articles dated Feb. 8 and Feb. 9 regarding the admissions policy.Prestigious award honors Linda Carpenter

Survey: Student alcohol use continues decline "Fewer students reported drinking in the past month and more reported having three or fewer drinks in a typical week when compared to past surveys," said Peggy O'Halloran, director of the Center for Alcohol Studies and Education. "The findings show that improved coordination of alcohol prevention and education programming is having a real effect on student drinking." Feb. 12-18 is Random Acts of Kindness Week Today residence hall assistants will begin recognizing residents for kind acts by awarding them Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) stickers, said Susan Harrison, Civility Team leader. Those recognized will be asked to pass on that recognition by awarding RAK stickers to others throughout the week. "If you receive recognition, wear your sticker proudly for the week," Harrison said. Those who know of someone to recognize for displaying kindness and respect can present the person with an RAK sticker (a few are available in the Student Organizations Complex in Davies Center) or share the details of the person's kindness through the online nomination form. All nominations will be reviewed. A few nominees will be selected for recognition in the Spectator. Others will be posted on the civility Web site.
