Nominations sought for Excellence in Performance Award
The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee invites nominations for the annual Excellence in Performance Award to be given in fall 2007. The UW-Eau Claire Foundation will present $1,500 to the recipient. Any administrative and/or professional member of the academic staff with a 50 percent or greater appointment may be nominated for the award. And, any member of the faculty, academic or classified staffs, administration or student body is welcome to nominate someone.
The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee will review all nominations and forward a recommendation to Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. Nominees will be considered for three years.

Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

Faculty/academic staff workshops and programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.
• The UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity abstract and application deadline is Feb. 5. • The deadline for Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Grants, University Research and Creative Activity and the Kell Container Corporation Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research is Feb. 15.
The U.S. Department of State has invited Osonye Tess Onwueme to India on its speaker program. Onwueme is scheduled to present keynote addresses and seminar presentations at Delhi University and the International Center (New Delhi), as well as at universities in Jodhpur, Mumbai, Calcutta, Assam, Berhampur, Bhubaneswar and Chennai. She will focus on issues related to cultural diversity, African-American literature, race and gender. Onwueme also has been scheduled by the State Department to give media interviews from Feb. 23 through March 10.
Johannes Strohschänk and William G. Thiel had their chapter titled “The Wisconsin Commissioner of Emigration 1852-1855: An Experiment in Social and Economic Engineering and Its Impact on German Immigration to Wisconsin” published in the book "Wisconsin German Land and Life," edited by Heike Bungert, Cora Lee Kluge and Robert Ostergren, Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies, UW-Madiison, 2006.
Foundations of Education
Rob Reid had his article titled "Flying under the Radar: Great Read-Alouds You May Have Missed" published in the January 2007 issue of Book Links magazine. The article covers a dozen children's chapter books that didn't win major awards, but have great read-aloud components. Reid's read-aloud articles soon will become a regular column in Book Links.
Learning and Technology Services
Rick Mickelson's photo titled "Impact" (at left) earned first place honors in the sports category of the monthly University Photographers Association of America competition for images taken during November 2006. The photo shows UW-River Falls midfielder Julie Sperstad (an Eau Claire Memorial High School graduate) heading the ball in a match against UW-Eau Claire during the WIAC conference soccer tournament hosted by UW-Eau Claire at Bollinger Fields Nov. 3, 2006.
Jill Markgraf had a chapter titled "Marketing Library Instruction to Off-Campus Faculty and Students" published in the book "Going the Distance: Library Instruction for Remote Learners," edited by Susan J. Clayton, Neal-Schuman Publishers, 2007.
