Announcements from Women in Higher Education
WHE logoThe Eau Claire chapter of Women in Higher Education invites all UW-Eau Claire women employees to join their group. WHE seeks to improve opportunities for women in higher education and meets for a variety of professional and social activities.

Winter Potluck:
The WHE winter potluck is an opportunity for all campus women to get re-energized for the coming semester, meet new people and exchange ideas on a variety of topics. The event will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Paula Stuettgen. For more information about the potluck or to RSVP, see the Winter Potluck invitation.

Membership for 2006-07:
WHE members are the group's greatest asset, and new members are always welcome. Annual membership dues are $5 for part-time staff members and $10 for full-time staff members.

Upcoming WHE Events:
        Feb. 28, 4:30-6:30 p.m. (location to be announced.) Women on Wednesdays event, co-sponsored with AAUW: Marc Goulet, mathematics, will present "Opportunities for Wisconsin Women in Science, Technology and Engineering."
        March 14, (time and location to be announced.) Women on Wednesdays/Women's History Month event, co-sponsored with the Commission on the Status of Women: Recreation of Judy Chicago's Dinner Party.
        Women on Wednesdays event on alternative healing methods tentatively scheduled for April.
        May 3 and 7, luncheons with the chancellor (time to be announced), Heritage Room, The Dulany.

Faculty/academic staff workshops and programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.

Program Deadlines:
        The UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity abstract and application deadline is Feb. 5.         The deadline for Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Grants, University Research and Creative Activity and the Kell Container Corporation Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research is Feb. 15. Art & Design
Anders Shafer (emeritus) presented a lecture titled "Making an Illustrated Children's Book" Feb. 21 at Winona State University in Winona, Minn. The lecture was part of WSU's semesterlong series titled "Celebration of the Book 2007: The Artist and the Book." Go to top of page

Chemistry 
Fred King recently had an article titled "Alternative Approach to the Derivation of Dispersion Relations for Optical Constants" published in the Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, Vol. 36, pages 10427-10435, 2006. Go to top of page

English
Bruce Taylor had his poem “Lately He’s Been Trying Not To Feel So Sentimental About Things” published in the Winter 2007 issue of Wisconsin People & Ideas, a magazine published by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. Go to top of page

Learning and Technology Services
Bill Hoepner has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Wisconsin. Bill volunteers his time and photographic skills to support a number of foundation events throughout the year. Go to top of page

Social Work
Len Gibbs (emeritus) co-authored a paper titled "Practical Advances in Evidence-Based Practice," which was presented at the annual conference of the Society for Social Work Research Jan. 11 in San Francisco, Calif. Other co-authors were S. Baus, E. Gambrill, S. McCracken, E. Mullen and A. Shlonsky. Go to top of page
