UW-Eau Claire makes Kiplinger's best-values list UW-Eau Claire is ranked 65th in the magazine's 2007 rankings, which are published in the magazine's February issue. UW-Eau Claire was ranked 69th in the magazine's 2006 "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" list. "What's special about these rankings is that they recognize the quality of education at UW-Eau Claire and also acknowledge that we're providing that first-class education at a price that students can afford," said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. Dr. Justin Patchin, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of criminal justice, and his co-researcher, Dr. Sameer Hinduja, assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University, recently have received national media attention for their first-of-its-kind analysis of teenagers' MySpace profiles. Patchin and Hinduja's research found that a majority of teenagers are responsible when using the online social networking site MySpace, but a number of adolescents still share personal information that could put their safety at risk. The professors' work was featured in a recent UW-Eau Claire news release that resulted in coverage by regional and national media, including:
Library staff member Carol Lonning dies
Carol Lonning, 48, a library assistant in the cataloging department in UW-Eau Claire's McIntyre Library, died Jan. 10. Carol worked in cataloging since 2002. Before that she worked for the library as a student assistant. In 2001 she graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a major in business administration and a minor in library science. A memorial service was held Jan. 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorials may be given to the Horse Rescue Fund, Literacy Volunteers-Chippewa Valley, or the Eau Claire County Humane Association. Routinely UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff provide assistance through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation that makes research opportunities, travel abroad, mentoring experiences and internships possible for UW-Eau Claire students. With the kickoff of its 2006-07 Campus Campaign, "Empowering Lives Together," the Foundation recognizes its partnership with the many faculty and staff who give to benefit students. Gretchen Hutterli, assistant dean for external affairs in the College of Business, and Robert Erffmeyer, MBA program director and professor of marketing in the College of Business, are serving as this year's Campus Campaign chairs. They urge faculty and staff to participate in the campaign because the benefit of giving helps UW-Eau Claire to distinguish itself as a leading regional university that is student focused. "Private gifts help UW-Eau Claire differentiate itself from other universities," Hutterli said. "Gifts to the Foundation's campaign help UW-Eau Claire gain that extra edge. It allows the university to provide greater opportunities for students, the excellence that we couldn't provide without those gifts." All faculty and staff contributions to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation from July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007, will be recognized as contributions to Campus Campaign 2006-07. Full story.

Student receives heroism honor Antarctica research project to help studies of Mars
UW-Eau Claire professor of geography and anthropology Harry Jol recently returned from an international research project in Antarctica, where he used his expertise in ground penetrating radar to help a team investigate the internal structure of the sand dunes in the Victoria Valley sector of the Antarctica Dry Valleys. The results from the research will lead to increased understanding of the formation of cold climate dunes and help to interpret dunes of similar morphology on Mars, Jol said. Full story. Gary Schwartzhoff receives state award
Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music and director of choral activities at UW-Eau Claire, has been selected for the Outstanding Church Musician Award by the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association. He received the award Jan. 12 in Madison at the organization's state convention. "It's an honor to be recognized by my peers for this award," Schwartzhoff said. "My lifelong work in church music has been a rewarding experience involving the four churches I have been privileged to serve as director of music." Full story. The Dulany, the newly remodeled dining area on the upper level of UW-Eau Claire's Davies Center, will celebrate its grand reopening Jan. 29-Feb. 2. Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29. The new entrance to the restaurant is on the central hallway of Davies Center. Remodeling of The Dulany began the second week in September. Improvements include new tables and chairs, flooring and wallpaper. Historic photographs - nearly all of them the work of Gilbert Tanner, a member of the geography faculty from 1951 to 1983 who recorded campus life for more than two decades - will be displayed on the walls. The Dulany is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during the academic year. The restaurant features a daily all-you-care-to-eat buffet for $6.50. Daily ethnic theme buffets and prize drawings will take place during the week of the reopening. Buffet menus are available online. Full story. University Police establish tipster line The anonymous tipster line number is 715-855-5555. "The tipster line will provide people with another way to share information and/or report suspicious activities on campus," said UW-Eau Claire Police Lt. Rexann Lemke. "Callers don't have to identify themselves, which should encourage people who may not want to be identified to still contact law enforcement when they witness or learn about illegal activities."

Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has again included UW-Eau Claire among its 100 best values in public colleges. 
Area residents have several opportunities to contribute to a dialogue about UW System freshman admissions policy, including participating in a Jan. 29 statewide forum hosted by the UW System Board of Regents, to be broadcast live via videoconference from Madison. UW-Eau Claire will be one of five UW System campuses to broadcast the forum from 4-7 p.m. in Room 1132 of the Old Library.
The session will be carried over videoconferencing networks to facilitate live interaction between residents and the presenters.
The McIntyre Library's Special Collections area has moved to the fifth floor of McIntyre Library.
(Special Collections previously was located in the Old Library.) The new facility in Room 5022 features a large reading room with plenty of natural light and seating for 30 researchers.
UW-Eau Claire Police have established a new tipster line that will be active at the start of the spring 2007 semester.
