Gift creates marching band scholarships

A $25,000 endowed scholarship fund for the Blugold Marching Band has been established with the UW-Eau Claire Foundation by Northwestern Bank in Chippewa Falls. The endowment will generate $1,000 annually for scholarships to UW-Eau Claire students who are active in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band and enrolled for the next academic year. Applicants also must be involved in working with high school or middle school band programs in the Chippewa Valley. The scholarships are the result of the October bus crash involving the Chippewa Falls High School marching band and UW-Eau Claire marching band students and alumni. Five people were killed in the crash, including a UW-Eau Claire student and an alumnus. Several UW-Eau Claire students and an alumnus also were injured. Jerry Jacobson, president of Northwestern Bank and a UW-Eau Claire alumnus, said the Northwestern Bank Band Scholarships honor the memory of those lost and the commitment to marching band by all those who were on the bus. Study abroad program ranks 10th in nation
UW-Eau Claire sends more students abroad than any other master's-level institution in Wisconsin, and it ranks 10th nationally among all master's schools in the number of students who study abroad, according to the 2005 Open Doors Report of the Institute for International Education. The 2005 Open Doors Report indicates that 452 UW-Eau Claire students studied abroad during the 2003-04 academic year. That's almost 100 more students than any other master's level institution in Wisconsin, according to the report. "Our reputation for offering exceptional study abroad programs is why some students choose to attend to UW-Eau Claire,"said Karl Markgraf, director of the Center for International Education at UW-Eau Claire. "Many of our students have had an international experience before they even get to college and they're ready for more. The quality and diversity of our programs is very appealing to them." Sarah Harvieux receives adviser award
UW-Eau Claire health educator Sarah Harvieux, Student Health Service, recently received a 2005 Outstanding Adviser Award from The BACCHUS Network in recognition of her work with UW-Eau Claire's Student Wellness Advocacy Team. The BACCHUS Network is the leading organization dedicated to supporting student and young adult-based programs in the health and safety field. The 2005 Outstanding Advisor Award honors Harvieux's commitment to peer education and her leadership in health and safety education. She was nominated for the award by members of the SWATeam. Harvieux also received a regional outstanding adviser award last spring.

University Senate plans faculty advising forum
The University Senate invites UW-Eau Claire faculty and academic staff to attend its Open Forum on the Role of Faculty Advising on Tuesday, Nov. 29, from 3-4:45 p.m. in the Tamarack Room, Davies Center. The forum will include presentations and discussions on how advising is viewed, how it is assessed and how it is acknowledged or rewarded. No registration is required. Art & design announces annual New York trip
Eau Claire's department of art & design is planning its annual spring trip to New York City. The trip is scheduled during the university's spring break. Participants will leave at 6 p.m. March 17 from the Haas Fine Arts Center and will return on March 26. Informational meetings about the trip are planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov, 22, and Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Room 105 of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The trip is an opportunity for students, faculty and community members to explore art, music, theater and food in Manhattan and the Boroughs. Full story.

Registration continues for Winterim 2006
UW-Eau Claire's Winterim 2006, a three-week session that will run Jan. 3-20, will offer more than 70 classroom courses and four Web-based courses."This Winterim session provides such a rich array of course offerings compared to where we started just 10 years ago," said Jan Morse, administrative officer for academic affairs. Information about Winterim course offerings is on the UW-Eau Claire Registrar's Web site. Currently enrolled students and special students — including those not currently enrolled at UW-Eau Claire — can register up until the first day of class, but early registration is encouraged.
