Atherton memorial service is 5 p.m. Wednesday
A memorial service will be held at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Oct. 26, for Branden Atherton, 24, the UW-Eau Claire senior music education major killed along with four others in the Oct. 16 collision of a bus carrying Chippewa Falls High School marching band members, teachers, chaperones and family members. The service will be at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Several UW-Eau Claire students also were injured in the crash. The following news articles quote UW-Eau Claire faculty and students as they talk about the impact of losing Atherton and about coping with the tragedy:
A Chippewa Falls High School band parent also maintains a Web page with information about funeral and memorial services, obituaries, memorial scholarship details, condition reports on those injured in the crash, online guestbook links and an archive of photos and articles related to the tragedy. Havholm named interim assistant vice chancellor "Faculty-student collaborative research is one of the best educational tools we have," Havholm said. "I am looking forward to taking on the role of advocate for faculty, staff and students engaged in scholarship." Havholm, who joined UW-Eau Claire in 1993, will succeed Dr. Christopher Lind upon his retirement in February 2006. In the meantime, Havholm will begin working with Lind to ensure a smooth transition. “Karen Havholm has an impressive publication and research record,” Tallant said. “She also has successfully secured a number of external grants and has been an active participant in faculty-student undergraduate collaborative research.” Havholm received her bachelor of arts degree in geology from The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, and her master’s degree and doctorate in geology from the University of Texas at Austin.
At UW-Eau Claire, Havholm has worked on faculty-student research collaborations that have won awards at the regional and national levels, and she is active with the National Association of Geoscience Teachers as vice president and as chair of its distinguished speakers program. Christopherson retires after 28 years of service In addition to serving on numerous university committees, Christopherson has been a member of the Wisconsin Department of Justice Task Force on Children in Need and the planning committee of the Council of Social Work Annual Program Committee, and she has been the newsletter editor for the Wisconsin Council on Social Work Education. She also served as a consultant to Medical Educational Services Inc., which conducts seminars nationally for lawyers, social workers, nurses and other professionals. Recently, she has been active in the development and funding for the Community Based Service Training Partnership, which has provided continuing education for social workers in northern and eastern Wisconsin counties. Christopherson earned her undergraduate degree in sociology and psychology from UW-River Falls and subsequently conducted research at the University of Oslo in Norway under the auspices of a Fulbright Hays research grant. She later earned master's degrees in sociology and social work from UW-Madison. A search is under way for a person to fill the vacant associate dean position, said Steve Tallant, UW-Eau Claire interim provost and vice chancellor. Women-in-science proposal receives NSF funding
A proposal from investigators at UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Green Bay to increase the participation of women in science has been funded by the National Science Foundation. Marc Goulet, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of mathematics, along with Susie Sandrin, director of the UW System Women and Science Program, and Heidi Fencl, associate professor of physics at UW-Green Bay, have received a $199,891 NSF grant for "Wisconsin Women in Science, Technology and Engineering." The grant will run from January 2006 through December 2007. Full story. Book festival readings to be in Schofield Hall Faculty, staff receive new Blugold Cards this week New Blugold Cards are being produced for all ID card holders at the expense of U.S. Bank, which entered into a partnership with the university after a competitive bidding process initiated at the urging of the Student Senate last year. The new Blugold Card offers additional features including the optional use of the card as an ATM card or a PIN-based debit card. UW-Eau Claire students received their new Blugold Cards in August and September. Faculty and staff members should bring their current Blugold Cards or photo identification to receive a new Blugold Card. Those who cannot visit Willow Lounge during the times indicated can obtain a new card at the Blugold Card Office, Davies 156, at their convenience. The Blugold Card is administered by University Centers and Programs. For more information contact the Service Center, 836-4070.
