Wisconsin Humanities Council/Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters opportunities announced
The following presentations will be held Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in the Potawatomi Room, Davies Center, and at 4:30 p.m. in HSS 177:
Wisconsin Humanities Council:
• Dean Bakopoulos, executive director, WHC, will discuss funding opportunities for humanities projects that engage the public; speakers bureau; and other activities promoting the humanities.
Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters:
• Michael Strigel, executive director, WASAL, will discuss the Future of Farming and Rural Life in Wisconsin Public Policy Initiative (Wisconsin Idea); gallery space for artists; and programs and publications on all aspects of Wisconsin.

• The UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity abstract and application deadline is Feb. 13.
Development/Alumni Relations/Foundation
Robin Leary recently was appointed by Gov. Jim Doyle to serve on the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Board until May 1, 2009.
Leary also is a member of the Eau Claire County Board.

Joel Pace co-edited the book "Transatlantic Romanticism: An Anthology of British, American and Canadian Literature, 1767-1867," published in January by Longman (Pearson).
The textbook, edited with Chris Koenig-Woodyard and Lance Newman, is the first to include British, American and Canadian Romantic-era writing in one volume. Koenig-Woodyard, Newman and Pace also edited and introduced a special issue of "Romanticism on the Net," a peer-reviewed journal indexed by the Modern Language Association Bibliography. 
Foreign Languages
Twenty-five color slides taken by Roma Hoff (emerita) following the July 15, 1980, storm in Eau Claire are reproduced in the book "Spearhead Echo — The Storm of 1980" by Eau Claire native Lukas Hoffland.
Foreign Languages/Latin American Studies
José Valero and Stephanie Zighelboim's article "Don Alvaro o la fuerza del signo" ("Don Alvaro or the force of the sign") was published in Decimononica. Journal of Nineteenth Century Hispanic Cultural Production, Vol. 3, 2006, pages 53-71. The article can be accessed online. 
Geography and Anthropology
Harry Jol and co-authors Timothy Fisher (University of Toledo), Walter Loope (United States Geological Survey), Derald Smith (University of Calgary) and Laura Moore (Oberlin College) presented a paper titled "GPR Studies Along the Present and Past Coastlines of the Great Lakes" at the Geological Society of America 39th Annual Meeting of the North-Central Section May 19-20, 2005, in Minneapolis. The paper was published in Geological Society of America Abstracts with Programs, Vol. 37, No. 5, page 7. 
Kinesiology
Jeff Lindauer and Sean Bulger (West Virginia University) presented a poster titled "Infusion of a Professional Development Curricular Strand Across an Undergraduate Exercise Science Program" at the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education Conference Jan. 6 in San Diego, Calif. 
Music and Theatre Arts
Donald Patterson presented a lecture titled "Intermediate Level Concepts: Moving from the Method Book to Traditional Literature" for the Marshfield Area Music Teachers' Association Jan. 12 at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County Fine Arts Center.
Condolences
Condolences to Susan Haugen, accounting and finance, whose mother, Violet Mickelson, died Jan. 24 in Prairie Farm.
