Following are examples of UW-Eau Claire people and programs that recently appeared in the media. NOTE: Some newspapers, including the Leader-Telegram, require free registration. Research by Bill Frankenberger, psychology/Human Development Center, and others from the HDC was mentioned in an article titled "Smart pills: Why are ‘A’ students abusing drugs?” in the November 2004 issue of Teen Vogue magazine. Dick Boyum, emeritus, Counseling Services, will discuss coping strategies for living in a stressful world on the Wisconsin Public Radio show "Conversations with Larry Meiller" Oct. 19. The show can be heard on WHWC, 88.3 FM from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Boyum's portion of the show will begin at 11:45 a.m. Dale Taylor, emeritus, public health professions, was interviewed on Wisconsin Public Radio Oct. 14 about how music can promote positive changes in the psychological, physical and social function of humans. Geoff Peterson, political science, was interviewed on Wisconsin Public Radio Oct. 14 about the accuracy of polls prior to elections. Nita Johnson, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and UW-Eau Claire nursing students Toni Lerick and Kelly Blaskey were quoted in the Oct. 13 Leader-Telegram article "A born teacher," about the new birthing simulator and other simulators used at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Rodd Freitag, political science, was interviewed for an Oct. 13 WEAU-TV story about the impact the final presidential debate may have on undecided voters. Bill Frankenberger, psychology/Human Development Center, was quoted in the Oct. 11 Leader-Telegram article "Boys & Girls Club offers tutoring — University students lend helping hands." UW-Eau Claire students will tutor school-age children during the new "Power Hour" program at the Boys & Girls Club in Eau Claire. Bob Shaw, emeritus, Student Development and Diversity, was interviewed for a WEAU-TV story about the program. Research by Susan Moch, family health nursing, was mentioned in the Oct. 11 Nursezone.com article “Breast Cancer Research to Improve Odds and Lives.” Katherine Rhoades, College of Education and Human Services, and UW-Eau Claire student Mark L. Lee were recognized as recipients of state service-learning awards in the Oct. 10 Wisconsin State Journal article “Students learn by serving community.” Rick Zahalka, a UW-Eau Claire nontraditional nursing student and nursing intern at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, had his article titled "Old idea — new career," published in the June 2004 issue of the hospital's in-house publication, "Spectrum." |
