United Way 'Day of Caring' event planned for Friday
The campus community is invited to participate in a variety of fun-filled (and fund-raising) activities during this year's United Way "Day of Caring" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, on the Campus Mall.

Come on out and join the fun. Here's what you'll find:
Ice cream cones — Free-will donation.
Live Music
Dunk tank — Here's your opportunity to dunk the following: John Bachmeier (11-11:15 a.m.), Chuck Tomkovick (11:15-11:30 a.m.), Chip Eckardt (11:30-11:45 a.m.), Chuck Major (11:45 a.m.-noon), Mitch Kilcrease (noon-12:15 p.m.), Terry Gibbons (12:15-12:30 p.m.), Chad Wade - student (12:30-12:45 p.m.) and Katherine Rhoades and Don Christian (12:45-1 p.m.). Three throws for $1.
Marshmallow golf — Take a swing at this fun activity. Prizes will be awarded to the five females and five males who hit the marshmallow the farthest. Five marshmallows for $1.
Theme basket raffle — Check these out: Family Fun (Student Development and Diversity), Sweet Tooth (Human Resources), Let Us Grill You/Grilling (News Bureau), Down and Dirty/Gardening (Career Services), Leisure Time Activities (Admissions), Packers (Facilities and Management), Movie Time (Publications Office), Foundation/Blugold Stuff (Development/Alumni Relations) and Let Us Entertain You (Student Services). School supply donation barrels — New backpacks, school supplies, hats and mittens can be dropped off.

All of the money raised during the "Day of Caring" event will go toward reaching UW-Eau Claire's goal of $49,000 for the United Way of Greater Eau Claire. Watch for your United Way packets Oct. 1, and join the fun this Friday.

'He Said-She Said' presentation to raise awareness about sexual assault and alcohol
Speakers Katie Koestner and Gordon Braxton will try to raise awareness among incoming UW-Eau Claire freshmen about sexual assault and alcohol use during campus presentations Sept. 9.

First-year students will participate in the interactive male-inclusive presentation, "He Said-She Said," at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Koestner, a nationally known speaker who visited UW-Eau Claire last year, will begin the program with her keynote speech "No-Yes," in which she discusses prevention through respect. She will share with the students her personal experience with sexual assault as an 18-year-old, first-year student.

Braxton will talk about the role alcohol plays in sexual assault and about issues of oppression. He has spoken at schools all over the East Coast but will be visiting UW-Eau Claire for the first time.

"'He Said-She Said' was a remarkable program last year," said Jodi Thesing-Ritter, Associate Dean of Student Development at UW-Eau Claire. "We are very excited to bring this program back to campus so that our students may gain understanding about these serious issues. The speakers' presentations are powerful and I am sure will make a significant impact on our students." Full story.

BBC's Play of the Week features Tess Onwueme's 'Shakara: Dance Hall Queen'
"Shakara: Dance Hall Queen" (2001), an award-winning play by Nigerian playwright Tess Onwueme, a professor of English at UW-Eau Claire, was broadcast on BBC World Service Drama as part of the Play of the Week strand Sept. 4-5.

Bakra Bata Steel Drum Band to open Artists Series
The percussive sounds of Brazil, Africa, Cuba and Haiti will open the Artists Series season Tuesday, Sept. 14, when Bakra Bata Steel Drum Band performs at UW-Eau Claire. The eclectic, colorful and energetic steel drum and dance ensemble will begin its show at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Based in Seattle, Bakra Bata is highly original and distinctly American, drawing from the root traditions of trans-Atlantic cultures as they have developed in the Americas. The steel drum, played in combination with a fascinating variety of other percussion instruments, is a visual and aural delight for audiences, and the music with its emphasis on rhythmic modes and dance beats creates an upbeat, joyous ambience. Speakers present holistic framework for diversity
Approximately 100 UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff spent some time focusing on diversity during the "Rethinking Diversity: A Confluence of Teaching and Learning" seminar Aug. 30. Keynote speakers Seema Kapani (left), diversity education coordinator at UW Madison, and Hazel Symonette, senior policy and planning analyst and Excellence Through Diversity Institute director at UW-Madison, presented a holistic framework for creating a university environment that embraces and engages the many dimensions of diversity. The professional seminar also included opening remarks by Chancellor Donald Mash; the unveiling of the 2004-05 UW-Eau Claire Diversity Plan by Kimberly Barrett, associate vice chancellor for Student Development and Diversity; and a discussion on bringing diversity circles to the classroom.
