UW-Eau Claire Web site redesign in progress
Top-level pages of the UW-Eau Claire Web site
will have both a new look and navigation early next semester. For the
past several months a group of technology experts, writers and designers
have been working to create the new Web design.
The group is basing the redesign on feedback from a wide range of campus
Web users and Web publishers, the Electronic Communications and Publications
Committee (including Web design and Web functionality sub-committees)
and other key campus stakeholders. The group has undertaken an extensive
review of the current UW-Eau Claire Web site and hundreds of other higher
education sites, conducted surveys and consulted with faculty, staff
and administration to determine the direction of the redesign. Consultation
and review of the new site with various campus constituencies is ongoing.
In addition, off-campus Web users and a Twin Cities-based consulting
firm have been engaged to help determine best practices based on current
industry standards and to gather feedback from prospective students,
community members, alumni and other external audiences who have an interest
in the Web site.
The project objectives are to redesign
the UW-Eau Claire Web site so it:
• Establishes
a clear and consistent university image identity.
• Provides
easy navigation.
• Provides
understandable terminology.
• Provides
consistency across university Web sites.
• Improves
customer service.
Redesigning a Web site is
a time-consuming effort requiring the cooperative effort of a team of
employees from several units. The current redesign work group, with
Mike Rindo, executive director
of University Communications and Lillian
Hillis, university Web coordinator as team leaders, has been meeting
since the Project Charter and Plan was created in early 2003. The team
also includes Judy Berthiaume, director of the News Bureau; Mari Jo
Janke, director of Publications; Brian Hogan, Computing and Networking
Services; Mindy Merryfield, Publications; and Michelle Karstensen, Records
and Registration.
More details of the project will be shared with the campus community
as the project nears completion. An advance preview also will be provided
so faculty and staff have the opportunity to review the site prior to
launch.
The Web group also is in the
process of developing templates that will enable campus Web publishers
to create new sites or redesign current sites by incorporating the new
designs and navigation of the top-level pages. Training workshops to
familiarize publishers with the use of templates will be available through
CNS.
