National Nontraditional Student Awareness Week Event. Faculty, staff and students are invited to celebrate National Nontraditional Student Awareness Week. Events will be held on campus through Nov. 6. Today, Chris Kirchman, University Police, will offer car seat safety information from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Potawatomi Room of Davies Center.

Gear Up Open House. The university community is invited to attend an open house to learn about the Gear Up Program, which provides early college preparation and awareness services to students in low-income public school districts through tutorial centers, mentoring programs and student advocates who work with students through graduation and pre-college programs on campus. TLTDC Teaching and Learning Workshop. Jonathan Paver, Teaching and Learning Technology Development Center, will present "If You Teach It, Will They Learn? Simple Techniques to Assess Student Learning." Implementing a continuous flow of feedback from students about learning plays a key role in improving learning and modifying teaching. This workshop presents simple techniques to assess student learning using classroom assessment techniques (CATs) developed by Angelo and Cross. CATs can easily be integrated into the classroom and participants will leave the workshop with a practical strategy for implementing CATs and benefiting from student feedback. Campus Films. "Pulp Fiction." (U.S. 1994, directed by Quentin Tarantino, 154 minutes, rated R.) This one-of-a-kind gangster film interweaves three tales, told in a circular, fractured manner, which only fully connect when the final credits roll. The first story focuses on Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson), two hit men on duty for “the big boss,” Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), whose gorgeous wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), takes a liking to Vincent. In the second, a down-and-out pugilist (Bruce Willis), who is ordered to take a fall, decides that there’s more money in doing the opposite. The final chapter follows a pair of lovers (Amanda Plummer and Tim Roth) as they prepare to hold up a diner. Sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate. Foster Gallery Exhibit. A new exhibit titled "Crossing Dimensions: Differing Views of Power and Solitude" will feature the drawings of Robert Stackhouse and the sculptures of John McQueen, showing images and vessels that project a ghost-like interplay of strength, isolation and contemplation. An opening reception for the exhibit, on display through Nov. 26, will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The Forum. Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku will take his forum audience on a tour through the scientific world of tomorrow during his presentation titled “The World in 2020: Computers, Robots, DNA, Energy and Environment.” Michio Kaku explains the most fascinating and complex ideas in science today, in ways that are elegant and easy to understand, much like the late Carl Sagan. Tickets, available at the Service Center and at the door, are $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System/CVTC faculty/staff, or $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System/CVTC students. First Fridays Colloquium.
