James Brummer receives Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship
James
Brummer, professor of philosophy and religious studies, is the fifth
recipient of the Maxwell Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship at UW-Eau
Claire.
The award recognizes a commitment to the university, achievement in
scholarship and a commitment to student learning and life.
“I feel very honored to have won the Max Schoenfeld award for
2003,” Brummer said. “I knew Max, and, perhaps more importantly,
I knew to what extent his students respected him as a scholar and revered
him as a teacher. He left a legacy of leadership in teaching, research
and service to the university that is unsurpassed.”
Brummer will use the $5,000 award to work on an ethics book on residual
obligations, defending a certain concept in ethics that arises when
there are conflicts of duty. Full

UW-Eau Claire School of Education
receives high marks from DPI
UW-Eau
Claire’s School of Education received full accreditation approval
from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, making its teacher
education program one of just two in the state to-date to receive approval
under new legislation that governs such programs in Wisconsin.
“Given the tradition of excellence within the School of Education,
I’m not surprised by the outcome,” said Katherine Rhoades,
associate dean of the School of Education. “I’m proud of
how our faculty worked together to address the accreditation process’s
many challenges.”
Of seven teacher education programs in Wisconsin reviewed so far, only
UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls were granted full approval, Rhoades
said. The accreditation is good for five years. Full

Phase II Orientation, CUBEfest
successfully kick off college experience
UW-Eau Claire once again is a busy place. The
bustle of moving into dorms, saying goodbye to a carefree summer and
the prospect of schoolwork has settled in as students begin to dive
into another year of school.
This year's student body of
9,449 includes 1,879 new freshmen. The top-notch group of incoming freshmen
(average ACT score of 24.5) spent their first days on campus immersed
in a number of events and activities. The photos here capture some of
the smiles of UW-Eau Claire's freshmen class.

P.J. O’Rourke to open
Forum Series
Political
satirist P.J. O’Rourke will open the 62nd season of The Forum
at UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Sept.
17. His presentation, “The Politics
of Worry — Government vs. the Free Market: Which is Worse?”
will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
With more than a million words of trenchant journalism under his byline
and more citations in The Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations
than any other living writer, P.J. O’Rourke has established himself
as one of the funniest speakers in America. He is the best-selling author
of ten books, including “Parliament of Whores,” “Give
War a Chance,” “Eat the Rich” and “The CEO of
the Sofa.” Whether dealing with the inner workings of Washington,
the shifting political sands of the new world order, or his own living
room, O’Rourke is a savvy guide to national and world affairs.
