UW-Eau Claire again ranks in U.S. News & World
Report’s Top Tier
U.S.
News & World Report magazine has again ranked UW-Eau Claire in its
top tier of universities in the Midwest, and UW-Eau Claire also was
recognized as having one of the best undergraduate research programs
in the country.
This year’s rankings put UW-Eau Claire at No. 3 among regional
public universities in the Midwest, a region that includes schools in
12 states stretching from the Dakotas to the west, Missouri to the south
and Ohio to the east.
“These quantitatively measured rankings continue to be very competitive,
so we are proud to be included among the top schools in the Midwest
for the ninth consecutive year,” Chancellor Donald Mash said.
“It speaks well of our faculty, staff, students and alumni.”

DNR grants permit for Chippewa
River bank stabilization project
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
has granted UW-Eau Claire a permit to stabilize a portion of the Chippewa
River riverbank that runs through campus.
The project will reinforce approximately 1,200 feet of the riverbank
along Garfield Avenue from the university pedestrian bridge to the Putnam
Park parking lot. The project is necessary because of a history of erosion
of the riverbank as well as concerns for public safety and damage to
the university’s infrastructure along that stretch of the river
that could result from a potential collapse of the bank under certain
conditions. Full

It happened right under our noses — or his nose.
This summer, after 33 years, Chancellor Mash decided to bare his lip.
Yes, he is no longer a mustachioed fellow.
Orientation activities to
welcome new freshmen
The
school year will be under way Aug. 28 for UW-Eau Claire’s nearly
1,900 new freshmen. The new students are invited to attend the second
phase of their orientation to the university, which began during Summer
Orientation when they registered for classes.
“We know once first-year students move into the residence halls
or as commuter students get ready to start classes, they will have many
questions. Phase two is designed to help answer those questions, increase
students’ sense of comfort and belonging and help them feel confidence
as they start classes,” said Jacqueline Bonneville, coordinator
of new student orientation. Full

Letter from associate vice chancellor for Student
Development and Diversity

Dear Students, Faculty
and Staff of UW- Eau Claire,
It is with great pleasure that I write this
letter of introduction. Although I have been on the job for almost two
months now and have met many wonderful people, I have awaited the arrival
of the campus's full complement of faculty and students with much anticipation.
Campuses have a special type of energy in the fall that comes with the
hope that a new beginning brings. As most of you are aware, what was
formerly the Dean of Students Office has been restructured into the
Office of Student Development and Diversity. This represents another
type of beginning for me and the campus. As the new associate vice chancellor
for Student Development and Diversity, I would like to share with you
my hopes for the coming year. Full

UW-Eau
Claire’s new instructional designer to offer seminar to faculty
Aug. 26
 |
| Jonathan Paver, instructional
designer in TLTDC |
As part of the opening week for faculty and academic
staff at UW-Eau Claire, the Network for Excellence in Teaching and the
Teaching and Learning Technology Development Center will present a seminar
to address instructional design at UW-Eau Claire.
Jonathan Paver, the new instructional designer at the TLTDC, will lead
the seminar, “Beginning the Year Right: Instructional Design Comes
of Age at UW-Eau Claire,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 26,
in the Hibbard Hall Penthouse.
“It is my hope that any faculty attending this session will begin
the process of thinking about how they teach and how they might be able
to explore different teaching methods to enhance student learning,”
Paver said.
Paver will discuss the definition of instructional design and the work
of instructional designers. The seminar also will address the basic
assumptions of instructional design and explore the psychological and
epistemological foundations of systematic instructional design. Participants
will be given the opportunity to work through a course design process
that can be used on new or existing courses and Paver will highlight
the role the TLTDC plays as a resource in this integration process.
