Gina Duwe recipient of Ann Devroy
Scholarship
UW-Eau
Claire junior Gina Duwe of Wausau will spend her winter break in Washington,
D.C., working at The Washington Post. Duwe was introduced as the seventh
recipient of the Ann Devroy Fellowship during the April 22 forum, which
included a speech by Andrea Mitchell.
The fellowship includes a three-week residency at The Washington Post,
a $1,400 scholarship to defray the costs of the residency and an internship
at a Wisconsin newspaper in the summer of 2005. Duwe is a part-time
reporter for the Leader-Telegram as well as a chief copy editor at The
Spectator.

Student Research
Day set for April 26-27
UW-Eau
Claire students will display their student and faculty collaborative
research and independent student research at the12th annual Student
Research Day April 26-27.
Posters will be on display from noon
to 4 p.m. April 26 and from 8
a.m. to noon April 27 in the Council Fire
Room of Davies Center. Students will be with their posters and available
to discuss their research during the April 26 poster session.
The event highlights student research accomplishments, as well as the
importance of faculty and academic staff acting as mentors in the scholarly
activity process, said Chris Lind, assistant vice chancellor and director
of the Center of Excellence for Faculty/Student Research Collaboration.
This year’s projects represent student/faculty collaborations
in 29 departments and units, with 182 displays involving 345 students
and 130 faculty mentors. Full

UW-Eau Claire students
to display research at Wisconsin Capitol
Several UW-Eau Claire undergraduate students
will display their research posters from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April
27 in the State Capitol Rotunda in Madison.
The event, titled “Posters in the Rotunda: A Celebration of Undergraduate
Research,” is sponsored by the UW System.
As the UW System’s designated Center of Excellence for Faculty
and Undergraduate Research Collaborations, UW-Eau Claire students and
faculty regularly work together to complete nationally recognized
research in a variety of disciplines.
Students across campus have research opportunities often found only
at large graduate research institutions. U.S. News & World Report’s
“America’s Best Colleges 2004” lists UW-Eau Claire
among the top 39 national institutions engaged in undergraduate research/creative
projects.
In Madison, UW-Eau Claire students and faculty mentors will join researchers
from other System schools to discuss their work and the value of undergraduate

Human Diversity Expo to feature
wide variety of research
Education and social work students at UW-Eau
Claire will share results of their diversity research projects during
the 10th Bi-Annual Human Diversity Expo April
29.
The Expo, which will run from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in the Council Fire Room
of Davies Center, will feature projects designed by 150 students currently
enrolled in “Social Foundations of Human Relations” courses,
taught by Cynthia Gray-Mash and Darlene Fry, and the “Ethnic-sensitive
Social Work Practice” course taught by La Vonne Cornell-Swanson.
The event has been held each semester since the fall of 1998. Full

Artists
Series to present Ragamala Music and Dance Theater
A performance by Ragamala Music and Dance Theater April
27 will conclude this season's Artists
Series at UW-Eau Claire.
The company’s performance, titled “From Temple to Theater,”
will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
Ragamala Music and Dance Theater’s work bridges ancient and modern
cultures, exploring a unique style of living poetry for the stage. The
program will feature a selection of works that represent the company’s
range, from the soulful classical music of India to the thundering Taiko
drums of Japan to stirring original poetry set to Western piano. Full

Forensics team places in top
ten at NFA, includes national champion
The UW-Eau Claire forensics team recently took
9th place in the nation at the National Forensics Association tournament
in Malcomb, Ill.
In addition to placing in the top ten at the NFA, UW-Eau Claire produced
a national champion. Junior Kelly Bender, New London, was named the
national champion in persuasive speaking. Bender also placed 6th in
the nation in informative speaking and took 15th place in the pentathlon.
This is the second year in a row that the NFA persuasive speaking champion
is from Eau Claire. Full

Madison’s MadiSalsa
to perform Latin music at
UW-Eau Claire
Wisconsin may not be the first place people think of when Latin music
is mentioned, but Madison is home to MadiSalsa, a 10-member ensemble
that will be bringing their high-energy music to Eau Claire on Thursday,
April 29.
The group, voted Madison’s favorite dance band for three years
in a row (2000-02) by readers of the Isthmus newspaper, will open
the 16th Annual Midwest Conference on Latin American Studies by performing
at 7 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center.

Nine individuals received special
awards at UW-Eau Claire's Service-Learning Recognition Breakfast April
20. The sixth annual breakfast was held to honor the more than 500 community
partners, project supervisors and UW-Eau Claire faculty mentors who
have contributed to the success of the university's service-learning
program.
Paula Kleintjes, biology,
and Lisa Theo,
geography and anthropology, received Faculty/Academic Staff Member Excellence
in Service-Learning Awards.
Lucianne Boardman, Reading
Partner coordinator; Julie Harnish,
Montessori — Children's House; Darwin
Wassick, emeriti and 3-5 Club; and Becky
Wurzer, Children's Center, received Excellence
in Service-Learning as a Community Partner Awards.

Smooth running

The first track meet on the new surface at Simpson Field was held
April 17, when UW-Eau Claire hosted the 2004 Blugold Open. UW-Eau
Claire athletes Heather Lipinski and Jane Ovanin were among the
first runners to test out the track in the women's 10,000-meter
