Dean of students speaks at graduation
UW-Eau Claire Dean of Students Ann Lapp will deliver the "Charge to the Class" at the Aug. 8 summer commencement ceremony.
Lapp's speech, titled "Building on Lessons Learned: Anchors for Tomorrow," focuses on the significance of having a liberal arts foundation, she said.
"What I'm basically pointing out to them is how a liberal arts degree will serve them very well in the future," Lapp said. "At a time of unprecedented change, they need to remember that the world is not a thing, but a complex, always-changing tapestry. Searching for a stable, well-defined course will not serve them well."
Lapp said her position gives her an unusual perspective on the student body because she meets with students in groups and as individuals from the moment they enter the university as freshmen through graduation.
Most student don't have any idea how much they've grown and developed since they began at UW-Eau Claire, she said.
"Being in the Dean of Students office is like having the best seat in the house," she said. "You get to watch all this."
Graduates of UW-Eau Claire are intelligent and extremely well prepared to meet whatever challenges they will be faced with in their lives, she said.
"There's just no question that we have so many strong students. They're recognized nationally for their accomplishments," she said. "They're leaving here very fit to meet their future goals."
It is this thought that she hopes to share with the graduates during her commencement speech Saturday.
"I really believe that a degree from UW-Eau Claire is unique," Lapp said. "I want them (to leave the university) with the sense that they're walking out with something of which they should be very proud.
"The graduation rite of passage into the ever-changing world holds different expectations for university graduates. Educated men and women have a responsibility to show leadership and creative problem solving. Graduates from UW-Eau Claire are well poised for these challenges."
