Michael Jerling to present outdoor concert
Singer-songwriter Michael Jerling will present a free outdoor concert Monday, June 24, at UW-Eau Claire.
     The Summer Session Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
     Illinois-born songwriter Michael Jerling became involved with music while he helped run The Cabin as a student at UW-Eau Claire. Settled now in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Jerling has been a noted artist on the club, college and festival circuits since 1975. He has been among the winners of the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and his involvement with the Fast Folk Musical Magazine in New York City led to one of his songs being included on the album "Fast Folk: A Community of Singers & Songwriters" (Smithsonian Folkways 2002). His newest CD is "Little Movies" (2001).
     Also on campus during the week of June 24 are these free events:
  • Concerts by UW-Eau Claire and area jazz musicians will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin, Davies Center). A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold.
  • David Mamet's 1999 drama, "The Winslow Boy," will screen Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

     A tribute to the ideals of justice, Terence Rattigan's 1946 play is based on a 1910 British court case that was an unprecedented challenge to the crown. Mamet's adaptation emphasizes the central household and the values embodied by its members -- principally the stern, compassionate patriarch, the suffragette daughter and young Ronnie, a cadet at the Royal Naval College. When Ronnie is summarily expelled from school for stealing -- a charge he denies -- the family engages a celebrated conservative lawyer to press for the hearing the boy has been denied. The case becomes a national cause celebre, and great financial and personal sacrifices must be made in order to bring the case to court. Rated G, the 110-minute color film will screen via DVD projection.

University Centers director hired
An experienced professional who has worked in student services for more than a decade has been named director of University Centers and Programs at UW-Eau Claire.
E. Mitchell Kilcrease will begin his duties July 15.
     As director of University Centers and Programs, Kilcrease will be responsible for managing and operating Davies Center, the University Arena and Schofield Auditorium. Kilcrease also will assume partial responsibility for managing and operating Hilltop Center and Crest Wellness Center. He will be responsible for the educational, social and cultural programs and services conducted in those and other campus facilities.
     Kilcrease has served as associate director of Reeve Memorial Union/director of University Dining and Retail Services at UW-Oshkosh since 1999, and has been associate director of that student union since 1996. He joined UW-Oshkosh's staff in 1995 as assistant director of Reeve Memorial Union.
     Prior to his work at UW-Oshkosh, Kilcrease was director of student activities and Greek life from 1991-95 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
     Kilcrease earned his undergraduate degree from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Ark., and his master's from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.
